I considered taking Maverick this rd. I too was surprised it was still around. I was however more surprised Colossos was still around.

Maverick flirts with greatness. Those OTSR's are unreal bad on maverick. If it had lap bars, kept the 0-g roll, and did something better after the launch tunnel I think it could be a contender for #1 steel. The world needs a new great steel coaster. Anyone think 305 has a shot?

^not a chance. Especially considering it has OTSR. Millennium Force is still going to be better in my mind. Yes, Intimidator 305 may turn out to have more airtime and other aspects that I would want in one of my favorite steel coasters, but Millennium Force will always have a special place in my heart. To simplify my thoughts on Millennium Force, all I can say is that it is visually stunning, pure fun to ride, unlike any other coaster, and took coaster design to new levels when it opened back in 2000. It was also the only giga coaster in the entire world for an entire decade! Gotta love Millennium Force =)

BTW Matt, thanks for being nice about Maverick, it was good to hear some positives about an Intamin coaster from you  Tongue

What Rob said. It has two pace killers actually. The awkward helix after the midcourse brake is the other one.

And it has trims on two of the big hills.

Goliath is still the best B&M hyper just for pacing, let alone its extra powerful airtime.

Nitro is kind of like Intimidator though, it as a trim before the hammer head, it has a mid-course brake-run, just the big difference is that Nitro will have much better pacing since the mid-course brake run is never used.

Besides a quick scrape sound, have you ever actually felt the nitro trim slow down the train?  Seems to me that its usually doing next to nothing. I think our weather varies too much in NJ to slow it down anyway.

I have heard the scrape, that trim was around ever since they moved the camera to the bottom of the first drop and it's done next to nothing since. The mcbr is about the same also, because it doesn't slow the train down much like other brake runs do.

Yea, you can hear the scrape, but you don't feel anything, which is great. I don't get why the more recent B&M hypers have a MCBR followed by a boring helix and one bunny hop. At least Diamondback has two fairly big bunny hops, a helix, and a splashdown after the MCBR.

Carowinds Intimidator will likely be the better one... But KD's 305 Intimidator has a much higher ceiling for greatness. Won't be long now till we find out.

Look at all of those trim brakes. Actually they don't kill the ride as much as the terrible ending does. Helixes are only good if they are taken with great speed and don't interrupt the flow of the ride. Nitro, Apollo and Goliath do it right. The other B&Ms just feel like "hey let's go in a circle just because we can".

The mid-course on this ride is essentially the ending of the ride. With one decent pop of air at the very end which can catch you off guard. Pre mid-course is awesome!

If there was no midcourse there and the train dove into that double helix, it would be so much better. But that pause on the brake just ruins the pacing since it never builds up any excitement from that point on. Two train operation is really all you need for a coaster unless it's as long as The Beast. Adding a block brake just so you can have a third train that is lucky to boost capacity by 20% is just a waste. Make the ride more exciting and keep the trains from stacking on the final brake run by sticking to two trains, B&M.

Behemoth is an awesome ride, and honestly I would rank it before Nitro if it weren't for the disappointing ending. The train also crawls into the final brakes in the back row, where on Nitro you still get a pop of air entering the brake run in the last row. Along with the Beast, Millennium Force is capable of running 3 trains without having a mid course break run. Did I mention I love Millennium Force?

Beast has a midcourse brake, plus a second lift, so it basically has two midcourse brakes. MF doesn't need a midcourse brake, because it has a split load and unload station setup. I would love Behemoth if it had Nitro's second half, but a bad ending trumps a great beginning for me pretty much every time. B&M's seem to suffer from this problem quite often.

By the time behemoth hits that mid corse its already pwned nitro so hard it could just take a lazy left turn and mozy back to the station. Wink

I guess i'll have to go back to SFGA soon to try Nitro again. I must be missing something. If you sit front row on behemoth the final bunny hop gives huge air. Back is far better overall though.

But that mozying at the end would spoil everything before.

The thing about Nitro is that it's extremely well paced for a coaster with a block brake, and it makes great use of the helix element. It's not as good in the airtime department as Behemoth, but it it has a great start, great middle and great ending, where as Behemoth starts off better then finishes horribly. If you could replace Behemoth's ending with Nitro's ending, you'd have one of the absolute best rides ever, perhaps the greatest steel coaster ever.
