Looks like Nitro has lost it's amazing view.  Unless somebody has some deep pockets, we may not see this lake return either.

Please update us if anybody hears anything new on this because aside from hunting and fishing sites, there appears to be little to no news about it.

9/20/11 Update: The Asbury Park Press now has a story on the lake

Wait, is this the entire lake next to the park with the fireworks and ski stadium or another separate body of water by Nitro?

Those two are seperate.  The lake by the stadium is Switlik Lake and I beleive it is actually owned by Six Flags.  Or at least they are responsible for it's well-being.

Take a look at the park from google maps and you'll see a very small divider between the two.

Wow! I was on Nitro this past Saturday and I noticed that the lake looked funky. I thought that maybe the water was just really brown in some spots, but i guess it was actually the ground that I was looking at.

Looks like the Irene is still causing damage weeks later.
I'm sure this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

From what I could find online, it appears this has been ongoing for some time.  It actually just failed last week and while I'm sure the storms didn't help, it was only a matter of time.  Getting it fixed has also been being discussed for some time with no resolution found as to who will pay for it.

Really surprised me. There's a lot I don't know about the lakes and such but it's not often where you get to see an entire one drain like a tub.

3,000 fish rescued from Jackson lake

JACKSON — The failure of an outlet structure at Prospertown Lake drained the centerpiece of the Jackson wildlife area, though workers with the state Division of Fish and Wildlife were able to rescue more than 3,000 fish and relocate them to Turnmill Pond, state officials reported Monday.

A popular fishing location on Route 537, Prospertown Lake began dropping by a foot a day last week after the collapse of the outlet that controls discharge into Lahaway Creek.

The steel floodgates in the lake dam “are 27 years old, and our engineers think they were just overrun by (Hurricane Irene) and the subsequent storm,” said Larry Ragonese, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The good news is the lake dam held, and no homes were endangered downstream, Ragonese said. The failure happened two weeks after the hurricane washed out other roads and bridges in Jackson.

Within a couple of days, workers recovered 1,000 crappies, yellow perch, bluegills, brown bullhead catfish and largemouth bass and released them in the pond at nearby Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area.

Teams were back out in boats Monday using electrofishing, a technique that uses mild electrical shocks to stun fish so they can be collected alive.

The lake now looks like a river coursing through a muddy floodplain, and it will be like that for months to come, officials said.

“We’re not likely to see that lake filled until sometime in mid to late 2012,” Ragonese said.

DEP engineers are assessing the damage to plan repairs but don’t have a cost estimate yet, he said.

Once the lake does refill, wildlife workers can again collect fish from Turnmill Pond and return them to Prospertown, Ragonese said.
