The Dark Knight Coaster is coming in 2008!  Be transformed into a citizen of
Gotham City ? caught in the middle of a city under siege and torn apart by The Joker.
With The Dark Knight, experience the ride of a lifetime.  Venture through demented hallways of twists, turns and hallucinatory images, while being tormented by The Joker himself.  Then set foot onto a distressed, vandalized train platform.  You can only guess at what awaits as you speed through six
180-degree hairpin turns, climb unseen hills, plunge into pitch darkness and dip into unforeseen danger.  As you attempt to escape the terror, your only hope is that Gotham's Silent Guardian ?
Batman ? can save you!

Six Flags Great Adventure Announces 'The Dark Knight' Themed Coaster for
2008 Season
Six Flags Great Adventure announced today its new attraction for 2008: "The Dark Knight Coaster," an indoor dark coaster based on Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming movie The Dark Knight featuring
DC Comics' characters Batman and The Joker.  The Dark Knight Coaster opens April 2008.

"Today's announcement represents Six Flags Great Adventure's continued focus on delivering a
well-rounded and balanced entertainment package," said Mark Kane, Six Flags Great Adventure's Park President.  "The Dark Knight Coaster offers a unique experience that will appeal to families and teens alike."

The Dark Knight Coaster will transform guests into citizens of Gotham City ? caught in the middle of a city under siege and torn apart by The Joker.

With The Dark Knight Coaster, guests will experience the ride of their lives.  Venturing through demented hallways of twists, turns and hallucinatory images, they are tormented by The Joker himself.  Then as they set foot onto a distressed, vandalized train platform, they can only guess at what awaits them as they speed through six 180-degree hairpin turns, climb unseen hills, plunge into pitch darkness and dip into unforeseen danger.  As they attempt to escape the terror, their only hope is that Gotham's Silent Guardian ? Batman ? can save them.

"The opening of The Dark Knight Coaster will be perfectly-timed to coincide with the debut of the next Batman film from director Christopher Nolan.  We're very excited that fans will be able to have a
first-hand experience with the sites, sounds and thrills of crime fighting in Gotham City," said
Brad Globe, President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Consumer Products.

The Dark Knight Coaster will use storytelling, physical movement, video, sound and special effects to bring guests a one-of-a-kind dark ride experience.  The $7.5 million coaster will be located in the Movietown section of Six Flags Great Adventure.

About The Dark Knight Movie
Batman (Christian Bale) raises the stakes in his war on crime in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent

The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker
(Heath Ledger). The Dark Knight releases in theaters July 18, 2008.

I am with you on this one!!! My 7 yr old is going to be so excited to hear about this. He can ride Torro but, he's not quite ready for it yet. This addition will please everyone in my house and, all my friends that are parents of betweeners. I know betweeners is not a word but, it's our term for the kids who haven't hit 54 inches yet LOL.

Perfect addition to the park and a major smart move by Six Flags.  Not only another ride in the shorter height range but its indoors.  In a odd way, we are getting our dark ride at the same time :)

All of this for only 7.5 million.  Is this their new cap on coasters?  The new GCI is almost the same cost lol

I agree

- New Coaster
- Dark ride
- Family ride
- not to costly

Wow Great Adventure 3 years in a row a new coaster,  but minus 2
This will sell more season passes

As much as I love 25 million dollar rides its just not good for the companies finances, plus i own many shares and this will give a little boost.
they can build all 3 of these at 3 parks for less then the cost of a "mega" type coaster, spread the love.
Just as Wade mentioned with the New Woodie

Big is not always better

I wonder how much they can sell or did sell Chiller for ?
Title: Re: The Dark Knight coming in 2008...
Post by: WadeJ on September 27, 2007, 11:28:52 AM
The only place 25+ million dollar rides belong are the Florida Universal parks, Disney parks and maybe the Busch parks.  They just don't belong in seasonal parks.  Six Flags is about to install what are probabaly outstanding dark ride coasters in 3 parks for less money than one Kingda Ka.

As for Chiller, last I heard its not for sale or being sold.  Just simply removed.  It will probably sit around like Ultra Twister in a field somewhere and rust before they finally scrap it.  Presumably, there are MANY parts that are valuable to them for the other Preimer coasters in the chain.  Those parts alone make the careful disassembly worthwhile.

Word on another forum is that some park in Europe bought it, I wonder how much truth there is to that! I don't know the person that posted it too well so I can't assume they do or, don't know someone who'd know? Uhg, That would be funny if it popped up overseas problem free huh? I wonder if our Evolution is still running well in St. Louis? Is that where it went? I can't remember! :(
Title: Re: The Dark Knight coming in 2008...
Post by: WadeJ on September 27, 2007, 11:40:11 AM
One has to wonder what is going to happen to Movie Town to make this happen.  They replaced Viper with Toro and refreshed the entire area.  Obviously, we have Golden Kingdom, Wiggles World and Bugs Bunny National Park which are mostly refreshed areas using existing infrastructure and layouts (with the exception of GK of course!).  Could there be more plans in the works??  They certainly started taking Chiller down early enough and the area is in desperate need of a cleanup.

As for Chiller, I can't see anybody being dumb enough to buy that hunk of crap lol.  Its a lemon.  If Six Flags couldn't get it working after pumping all that cash into I'm not sure why anybody else would want to try.

Agreed Wade, I thought it a funny rumor to but, you never know.. I thought the same of Evolution. I would have assumed the parts would at least be valuable as you have mentioned. As for Movietown, It does need some desperate attention these days. Maybe they will dredge up some stored flats? Wishful thinking I know. I would assume the Stunt Arena will be seeing new life. You know Rick is hoping for work again this winter.

On the jackson township zoning and planning board agenda for october 1 states this

"1.
Administrative Approvals
a. Block 3101, Lot 11 - Six Flags Great Adventure
Ride removal/replacement and re-theming
"
So maybe they will be retheming the area. One of you can go down to the meeting on monday night and find out. :)

Oh well....Batman it is....Hopefully there will be more details soon.

No more Batman themed rides ?  :-\   Not even using other charactors from the Batman francise?
Me thinks we'll see some Movie Town action.   IMO, this area is due for a massive makeover  ;D

I'll be working just down the road from that meeting! I wish I was able to just step out of work for an hour! I think Nitro keeping it's name would still sort of fit in Gotham City. I am sure they could get creative enough to incorporate it somehow.

To be honest, thats the one thing I don't think they are even sure about just yet.  Chillers removal was not originally in the plans for this ride even though the new ride was coming all along.  But it now seems they might try to reuse some of Chillers structure; which IMO is kinda cool if they can.  I've always liked Chillers theming (esp when it was all working!) and have some sentimental attachment to it as well.

I am sure they will figure out how to use Chiller's Queue House. They are probably looking to save money. Excavation of that building would become sort of costly, no? This will definately be interesting. I am looking forward to seeing new life to that side.

Anybody want to start taking bets on the future of Movie Town Water Effect?  The ride has been troublesome and is horribly outdated anyway.  We saw the surprise removal of the Arrow Hyroflume last year so anything is possible.

I was just thinking... now would probably be the best time to do it.

I also found it kinda odd how I've been checking the Jackson Twp. website for weeks for any details to be leaked and they kept holding off posting the agendas and NOW it appears lol

I can only think of 2 ways to reuse the building. one side is load and the other side is unload with a bend that connects the two.

The other way is to have one side the load and unlaod and have the other side animitronics and stuff.

Thats the only way I can see it being used.

Nice... Gave me a big SMILE  :)

Now really WHY no wonderwoman ride?? We girls need to unite and demand a ride .

As for the water effect ride I wouldn't miss it but on a hot day when congo rapids has a 2 hour wait it is a good place to cool off in less then an hour. The last ride I took on it though was a little weird that the boat seemed off it was kind of sideways and it was loaded pretty evenly. Also it was flooded like the drain holes were cloged.  I would like to see it updated but if it goes I wouldn't cry over it.

'Cause the only way men are going to ride Wonder Woman is if it's a real woman and not a coaster named for her.

Distressed and Vandalized huh. They can save alot of money on that part and just let the kids from NYC and Philly do it for free.

I dunno what to think of this coaster.  It's not what I heard it would be, I'm not sure where it's going anymore, and we don't even have any sort of imagery for it.  I wish there was a press release or something other than the simple announcement on the park website.

At this time, its still rumor that they plan to utiliize anything from the chiller site for this new ride.  The original plans had it going in Free Falls location and then stories started going wild once Chiller was going.  I don't think we'll know for sure until they start something but the one thing I do know is that at least as of last week, there were full intentions of keeping the buildings together from Chiller including the observitory.

Wow I can't believe Great Adventure is getting a new coaster for 2008! Although it is no record-breaking ride or anything, I am surprised there were no teasers, rumors, or anything floating around on the internet about this coaster. I am excited to see what this coaster is going to be like because the description did that say enough for me to get a good sense of the ride.

This is the kind of ride Great Adventure needed, that area without doubt needs some life and this will be the perfect thing to spark it. I would love to see the whole area re-done but thats a dream in my head. Another possible location could very well be in the Arena as i dont think it is used for much anymore besides the Hayride line....and thus the plot thickens! :)

It will be depressing to board the ride in Chiller's station though, If it does indeed go there...:(

Quoted from southview1 from GA Insider...

Quote
The meeting has ended for sf, here is what was learned.

- Chiller being removed.
- being replaced with enclosed ride with a dimension of 75'x45'x65'
- It will be a direct removal and replacement.
- There will be some themeing to go along.

The question was brought up about if there was going to be construction in undeveloped land, NO.
and MTWE was NOT on the list for removal, but personally i still think its strange to have a sign in the entry way.

There is no way that a Wild Mouse can fit in that...
Title: Re: The Dark Knight coming in 2008...
Post by: WadeJ on October 02, 2007, 10:12:25 PM
It should.  Plus Chiller had a ton of room from the unused queue.  I'm wondering how they plan to make this huge box look semi-decent there.  Skull Mountain backs to water and has trees near it.  This will sorta just looked plopped there much the same way Spongbob does.

Its definately too big for Free Falls plot unless they busted into the backstage area with the building. Geez, don't they learn anything from Disney?  Put the ride buildings BACKSTAGE!

Oh well, still a great addition.  As for MTWE, who knows at this point.  Remember, the Hydro Flume removal wasn't mentioned in the meeting minutes until mid-winter.  Annoucing the removal of two rides now could affect season pass sales and they likely wouldn't need to start ripping it down until the season ended anyway.  Thats IF its going.

I wonder how fast it will go.  There is no speed listed. I also found something interesing for Skull Mountain.  It says that a strobe light and sound effects will help you get through the ride.  There is no strobe lights or sound effects.  Has there ever been one?
Title: Re: The Dark Knight coming in 2008...
Post by: chilled182 on October 03, 2007, 11:02:52 AM
A long time ago back in the days of I dont know, 1997?  When chiller ran both sides yes, Skull Mountain did have strobe light effects.

theres a skull looking statue towards the end as well, you actually circle it a few times.. of course because the strobe lights are never on, you can never see it.

I thought the observation tower was still being used?  Clearly not.. unless they plan to build that into the building somehow.

Im still a little taken aback by this.  There will still be holes in the park, especially in movietown.  No batman shows again?  Still no replacement for stuntmans?

This side of the park is hurting big time, and I think it still will.

From NJ News letter ACE Rep today:

In an e-mailed interview with Angel Aristone, public relations director at Six Flags Great Adventure, I have learned just a couple more nuggets of info to share with our members:

- The Dark Knight Coaster will be located on the former site of Batman & Robin: The Chiller. It is not known if any part of the entrance queue or queue house will be reused for the new coaster.

- The coaster itself will be a Mack Wild Mouse model (i.e., HersheyPark's Wild Mouse) with ten individual cars carrying 4 passengers. Contrary to some reports over the internet, the cars will not spin nor will they be any other custom or unique type.

I am wondering if the back of the box shape could face MTWE toward the back of the arcade that faces the big wheel. If themed the right way it might fit in well but with NO drawings shown we will all only be able to guess.

As for SP sales would you really make a decision based on those two rides? I was more upset with the way the park was running two years ago that made me think of not renewing and now in the past two years it seems like a whole new park . People and Guest relations is what keeps customers in the park. If people feel they are having a good time and are enjoying themselves they will keep coming back . If it becomes a nightmare each and every visit then I can see not returning. Just my 2 cents.  :)

I was sorta hoping this ride would be a eurofighter at one point but the fact that it is a Mack completely throws that out of the window.

There is ALOT of space with Chiller And MTWe combined, especially for a Wild Mouse, plenty of room for theming...I'd actually like to see it go over the path and use part of FF's spot but this is just a dream :)

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but I don't remember it.  I find this to be an interesting bit of information

Quote
According to Six Flags, The Dark Knight Coaster will “transform guests into citizens of Gotham City - caught in the middle of a city under siege and torn apart by The Joker.” The Dark Knight Coaster’s will use storytelling, physical movement, video, sound and special effects to bring guests a one-of-a-kind dark ride experience.

Nevermind.  I looked through the thread and found it mentioned before.  I'm just slow. lol.

I was reading at SFNE Online that the AGAWAM Planning Board Minutes for November have been released. http://www.agawam.ma.us/filestorage/490/494/738/Microsoft_Word_-_11-1-07.pdf (http://www.agawam.ma.us/filestorage/490/494/738/Microsoft_Word_-_11-1-07.pdf). Scroll down to item 4.

Fortunately the minutes give the dimensions of the area and the building space and a nice surprise on climate control. Unfortunatley an  attraction will be removed to make way for the addition while Mind Eraser will get a a reprieve. It's a shame that SFNE guests will have to loose their 7 year young DC Comics Stunt Show Arena. Mind Eraser would make a perfect Dark Knight coaster as it comes with it's own POW! BLAM! SMACK!

They should re-theme and re-name Mind eraser  to Headbanger with a heavy Metal theme.
When I rode it it was an all out headbanger. ::)

Expect to see similar things at Eastcoaster in 12 days.

the below pics are From the Black Knight out at Six Flags Great America

here is a quote from a recent trip report about Black Knight

"Dark Knight cost $7.5. It will be heavily themed and have a preshow. The Cars will not stop in the station (similar to Disney). The rides story line is themed to you trying to escape Gotham City. The queue will be in the Theater Royale (Six Flags Great America). Christopher Nolan, the director of Dark Knight, was extremely hands on with the theming of the ride to ensure it followed the story line of the movie. It is extremely rare for a ride themed to a movie, to be allowed to open before said movie. There will be an event at the park. Probably the 10th or 17th of May(Six Flags Great America). It's not set yet. Everyone at the event received a "Font of the Line" pass for Dark Knight."

The Dark Knights Joker is Dead

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight" and is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking role as Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain."

My husband has been out there at least once a week so far. He has said the same thing. I really don't bother asking him (meaning my husband) to get information from the construction crews any more since SF posts their own construction updates. Six Flags Releases New Elements of 'The Dark Knight' Coaster
Monday March 3, 11:50 am ET
New Attraction Debuts in Three Six Flags Parks Late Spring 2008

Official video and Pics    www.prnewswire.com/mnr/sixflags/32174/

NEW YORK, March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Six Flags, Inc. (NYSE: SIX) released today key thematic elements of the highly anticipated 'The Dark Knight Coaster,' an indoor roller coaster based on Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming movie The Dark Knight. Featuring DC Comics' characters Batman and The Joker, the $7.5 million ride will open at three parks this spring -- Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ; Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, IL; and Six Flags New England in Agawam, MA.

'The design and construction of this ride will combine the excitement of The Dark Knight movie with the thrill of a roller coaster -- merging the two worlds into one unforgettable experience for our guests,' said Mike Antinoro, Six Flags Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Marketing. 'The Dark Knight film is a powerful follow-up to Batman Begins and we expect The Dark Knight Coaster to be a can't miss event for all audiences this summer as well.'

'We're excited to partner with Six Flags to deliver an experience for Batman fans like never before,' said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President of Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. 'The Dark Knight Coaster will give fans a firsthand experience, immersing them with the sights, sounds and thrills of crime fighting in Gotham City.'

'The Dark Knight Coaster will offer both fans of the film and of Batman a thrilling new way to experience the characters and their world,' says Cheryl Rubin, SVP Brand Management, DC Comics.

More than just a ride, The Dark Knight Coaster is an adventure that utilizes storytelling, physical movement, video, sound and special effects to bring guests a one-of-a-kind dark ride thrill. As part of the experience, park guests will see, hear and feel the action of the movie the moment they enter the ride queue line, as they are transformed into citizens of Gotham City -- caught in the middle of a city under siege and torn apart by The Joker. Guests will then board a Gotham City rail car and careen through demented hallways of twists, turns, unseen hills and chaotic images, and continue to be tormented by The Joker as they are thrust onto the battlefield of good vs. evil. Will The Dark Knight save them in time?

The attraction will introduce new, customized footage featuring District Attorney Harvey Dent (as portrayed by Aaron Eckhart), produced and shot specifically for The Dark Knight Coaster. The ride will also incorporate audio and visual elements from the film. The opening of The Dark Knight Coaster will be perfectly timed to coincide with the debut of The Dark Knight which opens July 18th.

I never noticed that it said "Send".  Selective reading I guess.  I never found a problem with the comments being under since in the articles it's supposed to emulate a news article, and most news sites have the comments under the  story.  The only thing I don't like is that you can't edit your post, forcing you to either leave a mistake, or delete everything and submit it again.  But, it is faithful to the news article feel that TinyPortal was going for when they made that feature.

The Movie in IMAX will be a totally new thing, If you plan on seeing this movie this looks like the best way

THE DARK KNIGHT: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE, from Warner Bros. Pictures, will feature four sequences filmed with IMAX? cameras.

This marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.

The follow-up to the action hit BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne. In the new film, Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker.

THE DARK KNIGHT: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE will be distributed exclusively by Warner Bros. Pictures.

TDK won't have help from Chiller, MTWE, Freefall, Musik Express, Autobahn, Pendulum, Spin Meister, Chaos, Flying Wave or Riptide as Nitro once had when it made its debut in the area. TDK might have more guests in line with younger guests as tall as 42'' to 53'' in line.

SFNE announced a glow in the dark parade t ofill the gap left by not having the Dark KNight. So does this mean they are scrapping our parade and bringing it to sfne?

I'm trying to get official word now ;-)

Seriosly though, this parade I think may be the only saving grace of this season in terms of guest satisfaction.  Dan, I can see the sarcasm bleeding from my phone as I type LOL.

LOL!

There are new cars available for rides like Flashback and Mind Eraser.  SFNE could get two new coasters for the price of three new trains. It must be tough for enthusiasts to loose a coaster they never rode, but  getting use out of two existing coaster would still be a good investment for New England IMHO.

I really hope that this is not the case . If the Glow in the Dark parade is moved to SFNE after pushing it on their web site , in the park for the past two weeks and  it is listed in all their upcoming events flyers . It is even on the coupons at Wawa etc. Bad marketing move to take it away from one park to give it to another .

If you read that one, it says the New Mexico park had the parade as well and it has been a "huge success."

What if they just have more floats already in the works?  I bet we get half of the parade and they get the other.

That's what I was thinking.  Something tells me this backup plan has been in the works for some time to.

"The Glow in the Park Parade is something that we wanted all along," he said. "Our guests are really going to be blown away by it when they see it."

"We are extremely excited about it," Six Flags spokeswoman Melissa M. Pinkerton said. "We have the best of the best working on the parade."

"We've already got a lot of roller coasters," Litton said. "This is going to be something entirely new for us."

Six Flags' 10 roller coasters include the Superman Ride of Steel, named the world's best steel coaster three out of the past five years by Amusement Today Magazine.

That's the spirit! I think the parade is a good fit for SFNE.

Besides, half could go to Great Adventure (2).

Half could go to Six Flags New England (2).

The rest, reside and remainder could go to Kentucky Kingdom....and be the grandest parade that park has ever seen! :)

True.  5 floats is already stretching the "parade" definition IMO.  Maybe they've taken the front line team member joke about "being the Glow in the Dark parade themselves" with the new shirts too seriously...

Here are more renderings of the thematic elements and story line for the new coaster.

I can't help but think a wild mouse will be a winner. Placing it indoors and adding special effects will make it even better.

It's looking more and more like it will indeed be one of the best wild mouse coasters in the world, and it's all because of the theming.  I'm excited to see that in action.  The only thing that looks like it could make it better is if it had the elevator lift that the Scooby Doo mouse in Australia has.

I was at the park yesterday, and they had the Picnic Grove opened to the public, so I got some shots (using my new camcorder) of the construction site.

Trees have been added for the over flow queue (similar to Batman).

I just want to point out, that this building isn't really as big as everyone thinks. It's actually smaller than Skull Mountain's, it's just up in your face.

It does look better with out the coaster there. I hope they do something good with it!

And before the flaming, this is how I got the shots. The Picnic grove was open to the pubic for "Kosher food"
