Title: Clementon Discussion, Pictures and Updates
Post by: Bubba Z on November 28, 2007, 11:36:20 AM
I know there is another thread about CLP, but since a lot of us might be checking out the Demo and taking pictures I thought it deserved it's own thread.

Falling Star complete.

I stopped by the park on the way home from work. I had a quick conversation with the company's GMs and then I had to get home quickly. Think Forrest Gump meeting President Kennedy. Here are a few pictures from across the Lake:

You guys are killing me :(

Dan, any word if a actual carousel will be back in there?  That building is a work of art and it pains me to see what has happened over the years.

That was very cool that they let you in for photos!

I hope to find out. I only stayed a few minutes. Maybe next time.  ;D

Does anybody remember if they were able to walk around the exterior of the carousel building before the tigers came? My last visit to the park was in 1983 before the tigers.

I took a few more pictures and put them in this album:

Last I recall, that area was so overgrown with crap that you couldn't hardly see the building from the lake.  I'm guessing they did some massive clearing there.  Plus, with falling star coming out, that is right in front of it so maybe they plan to open that whole area up?

Since 1983  ?  so you never been on J2 ?
As I remember the last few times I seen the Tiger show and bear show
behind the carousel building they had the Tiger cages and a old Camping trailer for the animal crew.
So we could not walk behind but we could walk in the front.

This carousel brings back many memories as a child, when we used to swim in the lake my Mom (god rest her soul) used to setup the blanket under a giant willow tree between the lake and the carousel and she would just listen to the music all day (Johnny Mathis type music).
We owned this park. After school and in the summer swimming and playing pinball all day and Kicking but on the biggest best Flyers around.

this is from Today, they drain down the lake in the winter.
I used to ice skate here in the winter.

Tom, I went to the park in 2002 and in 2004-2006. I don't remember the area around the Carousel as a kid. I remember the monster, the trabant, chicago shoot out, kiddie bumper cars and the dark ride to one side, the scrambler and flyers to the other side and the whip and bumper cars in front. I don't remember what was behind it on the lake side.

I didn't talk long because they were busy and I really had to go but I wouldn't be against driving by tomorrow.

Indeed, sad.  How quickly it came down, in just a day's work.  Amazing.

It was my first coaster, I was about 5 when I rode it.  I could not get enough.  I had not ridden it since I was a child, though I would have liked that one last ride.

I do understand the demise, its time had come and gone.  The coaster was in terrible shape and could not have been saved.  I wouldn't mind getting a piece of ledger board or something from it though.

This was the Only Wooden Coaster I stood up on.
But I do not recommend it.
Yes I was about the same age my first ride around 5
I think I rode this coaster more then any other coaster in my life
Hmmm  I got more then 100 rides on Kingda Ka  but almost living in the park for years I'm sure I pasted 100 on the Jack Rabbit. I was just so long ago when most on this board wasn't even born  ::)

I rode / stopped by the park tonight
And they have a few Big piles of wood ready to be removed.

I'm sure Hargrove Demo. has been shipping the coaster out to local landfills today and it should be clean by the end of the week or early next.

CLEMENTON - A century old South Jersey landmark is getting a facelift.

Clementon Park and Splash World's new owner announced today it is planning a major renovation that includes a 1-acre water park expansion and a longer season.

Officials with Adrenaline Family Entertainment, Inc. - the Edmond, Okla.-based company that bought the park in August - said the park will reopen on Memorial Day with a Victorian-themed Main Street and Polynesian-themed water park.

"It's a revered property, one that folks in this region hold close to their heart," the park's new general manager, David Dorman, said. "Generations of residents in this area remember going there, then taking their kids there."

Officials with Adrenaline Family Entertainment, Inc., the Oklahoma City-based company that bought the park in August, said the park will reopen on Memorial Day with a Victorian-themed Main Street and Polynesian-themed water park.

"It's a revered property, one that folks in this region hold close to their heart," the park's new general manager, David Dorman, said. "Generations of residents in this area remember going there, then taking their kids there."

The water park will undergo the largest expansion in the park's history with the addition of a multi-level water playland called Laguna Kahuna.

The 50-foot-tall structure, one of the country's biggest, will feature 10 slides, eight different play platforms and more than 125 jets, bubbles, streams, squirters, waterfalls and wheels.

A giant water bucket will sit atop the structure, ready to dump 422 gallons of water on unsuspecting visitors below.

To expand the water park, the company demolished the arcade building and relocated those attractions to the carousel building, Dorman said. Two rides have also been removed, the Falling Star and Chaos.

The other three game buildings will remain, but will be re-themed with thatched roofs and bamboo siding to match the water park's Polynesian theme.

"We have a host of buildings that are in fine shape, but need a new look," Dorman said.

The rest of the park will get new landscaping and the buildings will be redone to match the park's Victorian theme.

"We picked that theme because that's when the park was first developed," Dorman said.

With the addition of five more food and beverage stands and updated menus, visitors will have more choices.

The park's seven-pavilion picnic area, which host groups of between 100 and 8,000 people, will also be renovated.

"The park is a popular place for company picnics," Dorman said. "It's going to be far more comfortable and far more beautiful."

The 1,100-space parking lot will be resurfaced and the welcome sign on Berlin Road will feature the park's new logo and dramatic lighting.

Company officials wouldn't quote a specific figures, saying only that it will cost "millions of dollars" to renovate the 55-acre park, which includes the 11-acre Clementon Lake. They did not reveal how much the company paid the previous owner, Larry Baker, for the park.

The renovated park will remain open from Memorial Day through October, when the park will host the Halloween-themed event HalloScreams.

That means visitors will have 34 more days to enjoy the attractions.

The price of season passes will go down to $49.99 from about $100, Dorman said.

"We want to make sure it remains affordable," Dorman said.

About 250,000 people visited Clementon park last season, 60 percent of them from South Jersey, Dorman said.

Dorman said the sweeping changes came from the company officials' experience in managing and operating theme parks.

Adrenaline Family's CEO Hugh Eichelberger served as the executive vice president of Six Flag's Eastern region. Russell Kutman, the company's chief financial officer, spent 21 years as Six Flags' vice president of corporate finance and Dorman himself spent 15 years at various Six Flags throughout the country.

"We expect to rely on that experience to improve Clementon Park and Splash World," Dorman said. "It's going to be a spectacular little theme park and a jewel that the community is going to be proud of."

I am so sadden by this.  The Jack Rabbit was a true early wooden coaster.  It needed work, but how much does it costs to replace wood planks?  The theme that this park is trying for now would fit with a wooden coaster.  Also there is the draw of having 2 real coasters.  The mouse rides are carnival rides, they don't supplement real permanent coasters.

Clementon needs to do more than just lower the cost of season passes and extend the season into October.  They need to expand the parking lot across the park and remove the back one.  Move the maintenance buildings off Park Ave.  Move the rides that were plopped in the midway to the old back parking lot.  Put the carousel back inside its old building and reconsider having a lion show.

If all Jack Rabbit needed was replacing a few wooden planks, it would have been repaired a long time ago.  The coaster was one of the very few with no footings, built directly on the ground.  Repair to meet modern day standards, particularly in New Jersey, was not financially prudent or feasible, according to most experts who reviewed the situation.

Welcome to Gadvupdates flavious27

Yes an old time wooden coaster (like Kennywood Racer) would have looked good with the coming Victorian theme
but we still have 2009  ;)

But I would think there is no Woodie in the parks future they have enough work with Tsunami / PUMA

I would expect some type of STEEL coaster in 2009.
Lets just hope its not no wild mouse and something better and unique even a Looper Like Dorneys LAZAR   that will bring the crowds in for a small park

As of now the Carousel building is an Arcade for this year  , Yes no PUMA shows

I have seen other forums with estimates of 1 mil to 1.5 mil to complete revamp the jack rabbit.  I didn't know that the wood was directly on dirt and not concrete, so it would be more than replacing a few planks.  I have sentimental value with the jack rabbit along with a belief that if an amusements park has one or more coasters, one should be wood.  Also, clementon already has a steel coaster, puma (wood tracks on top of steel is not a woodie to me).  A coaster in jack rabbit's location would be a better fit and use than another covered kiddie area, imho.

Maybe a few years down the line the park will build another woodie like jr, better secured and built.  I mini el torro comes to my mind.

LOL  Matt, Keep in mind this is a Great Adventure fanboy site lol

I often wondered if Jack Rabbit could be rebuilt as a nearly identical clone out of wood but meeting todays codes.  The park needs a junior traditional coaster like that.  And now more than ever with their new theme.

Never been to Coney Island, so never been on Cyclone; I feel the hype for it is greater due to being in NYC.  I don't feel hybrids are true woodies.  Yes they have wood tracks, but their supports are more rigid then any coaster with wood supports.

J2 can not be compared to El Toro.  Different companies designing and buying the ride, different construction, different lengths.  My opinion of El Toro is that it is a woodie on crack and red bull. Never been on a ride that has maintained its speed throughout the ride like El Toro.  I hope that even though it was prefabbed and P n P, that it loosens up and matures.  It is has the same amount of sway that Rolling Thunder does and maintains its speed, my kids aren't going on that until they are 16 or 17.

Oh not a GA fanboy, I like their quantity of coasters, but hate the park.

Hey all -

I'm a Clementon resident who wrote an Images of America book about Clementon's history, and am now writing an article for South Jersey Magazine about the changes at Clementon Park.  I'm looking for informed people to give me their thoughts on the park's new direction (less "I'm so excited!" and more "Here are my thoughts on the name Puma.").  I'd love to talk with anyone who wouldn't mind the possibility of being included in the text.  Article's theme is "Clementon Park's renaissance;" nothing controversial.

Clementon Park updated the Website  www.clementonpark.com
It looks like Six Flags site with the scrolling main images on the main page
looks more "Family Friendly"
I notice a lot of sites with this design like www.skibluemt.com  etc.

I noticed they are offering Education days , I guess for school outing

Those are all good suggestions ...but I was just making a joke. We felt they should re-name all the rides with a 2 at the end. Falling star 2 "The remaking".  KNR2 .."This time it's for real" !  We even thought J2 would be Called J3 this season .  Sorry !

PUMA's 2nd hill is now getting work done on it.

I passed by today (Feb 14th) and seen a few workers on the upside of the 2nd hill.
this was the area that was reported last year to be worked on.

I JUST HOPE NO TRIMS ARE ADDED

then now back to Prince,  I think  :-\  ?

from screamscape

According to the latest podcast from Coasterdom, Clementon Park has already decided to rename their wooden coaster again before the park could even open for the season (this was reported here first see below). The coaster was known briefly as Tsunami, then J2 and currently still called Puma on the website will now be called Hellcat. They also tell us that the park will start to charge for parking this season. While this also hasn?t been confirmed by the park?s website yet, they say it is expected to be $6.
Assuming the Hellcat name goes through, would this be a record for the most different names a coaster has been called at a single park or has any other coaster gone under more than four different names?

OK Hellcat is better then Puma but Tsunami is still the better name
I live down the road and bought a season pass so i can ride a few times a week
now they will charge for parking
I guess i will have to park at CVS across the street or if they have some kind of parking pass
.

/\  That is too gentle and smooth of a cat lol

This is getting a little strange.  First, we hear they are trying to bring back a Victorian styled midway of times gone by but then go and thrown this name out there for the major coaster?

A traditional wooden coaster name would have been fine like Thunderbolt or get this... Jack Rabbit!

Personally I would have preferred they simply went back with the original name Tsunami.

I have this feel thing that trims wont really tame the ride THAT much, unless they are on hard like on Mean Streak's first drop or Raging Bull's 2nd hill... It just depends on where the brakes go, I'm hoping they won't hit until right before the helix, so the 2nd hill stay as intense as it is.

In March issue of South Jersey Magazine
Danielle L. Burrows wrote a great article on CLementon parks past and Future
I was quoted in the article a few times.

David Dorman, the general manager (ex Six Flags exc.) noted in the article that they will have a extra parking lot of route 30 for overflow with a shuttle.
also.
Concerning the Coasters name (Puma) he mentions it was a place holder (was accidentally posted on the website) and will be changed to to be more inline with the forest theme that will be incorporated in that area.
He also said the coaster will be repaired to make it smoother and Slower so it can be open everyday.
"When you combine a short coaster with 110 foot its a fascination lesson in physics."

so it looks like Tsunami will be trimmed  :'( but the question is where  ?

the magazine article is a great read can be found at local newsstands

Also here is a Link of the parks owners Adrenaline Family Entertainment
they plan on buying 8-10 more small family parks. Clementon is their first park

Can anyone confirm what has been or will be done to the ride? Trims, reprofiling? When I drove passed it last weekend, I noticed fresh wood going up the second hill and thought I saw the red train in the station. I keep hearing rumors that they want to tame it for the whole family. ::) As is, it is my second favorite woodie behind Voyage. I love how vicious it is!

Yes i seen that same new wood.
Men worked on the section for around a week  i think from driving by.
I hope they don't tame it much but i hear they will

I also love the ride

Medusa32 do you know the location of any trims to be added ?

I rode by many times this week and yes the park now:

- Has many buildings painted Victorian colors (even the ferris wheel cars have these same colors now)
- Water structure is rising fast at the old arcade location

now if they can get some of the old flats back like they had when i was a kid. just look at Knoebels and you will see what clementon used to be like and why i loved the park back then. Imagen riding the flyers everyday living blocks a way.
Flyers,Bumper cars, whip,a walk through Whacky Shack,a ride through Haunted  House,a Tribant,a Giant merry go round,a old time giant ferris wheel that held around 14+ people with 2 bench seats, lake swimming with divingboards, slides and docks,a mirror maze,a Houdini type ride,a dance hall above the food stand and they had a old rollercoaster called the Jack Rabbit  ;)

I will take some pics later today and post here tonight or tomorrow  since this is "Pictures of Clementon thread"

Starting with a 110-foot plummet, a stomach-swirling helix and ending with a series of bunny-hop hills with zero-gravity thrills?this ride is not for the weak!

I'm just hoping for no trims and where it won't effect the overall experience

The ride was nearly perfect. Slowing it down may make it more re-rideable, but will remove what I love about it. I am really curious to see how much the second half will suffer. As the first half could be slowed and still be good, but doing so would slow down the second half which already doesn't go fast enough to match the ferocity of the first half. That is the greatest helix ever!

So this is park # 2 out of around 10 they are looking to buy and fix up

BESSEMER, Ala., May 15, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Adrenaline Family Entertainment, Inc. announced today the acquisition of Alabama Adventure in Bessemer, Alabama. Adrenaline Family Entertainment is a theme park operating company made up of former seasoned senior Six Flags Inc. executives and majority owned by Angelo, Gordon & Co., an alternative investment management firm with more than $18 billion of assets under management. The acquisition is expected to be completed on May 15, 2008.(they bought Clementon Park Last Year)

Adrenaline Family Entertainment's CEO, Hue Eichelberger, was previously an Executive Vice President at Six Flags responsible for overseeing that company's operations in the eastern half of North America. Eichelberger commented, "The acquisition of Alabama Adventure was based on the quality of the Park, the impressive turnaround under the seller's ownership, the strength of the greater Birmingham market and the potential for significant growth." Alabama Adventure is the second Park purchased by Adrenaline in the past year and fits its business model of acquiring and operating high quality entertainment venues in strong regional markets.

The seller, Southland Entertainment, LLC, acquired the park in 2003 and has since invested substantial capital, including new rides and attractions. Southland will now turn its attention and resources to the development of the adjacent 157 acre parcel for which preliminary development plans include a hotel/indoor waterpark project, a possible RV park project and other commercial and retail development. Southland President, Kent Lemasters, stated, "Our decision to sell the Park was based not only on our desire to develop the real estate around the park, but it was also important for us to sell to someone who has the resources and experience to expand the park."

Adrenaline Family Entertainment's resources, operating experience and capital investment plan are expected to contribute to an improved park experience. Eichelberger, the Company's CEO, said, "We are committed to delivering top quality family entertainment to our visitors and are excited to show the people of the great state of Alabama what we can do."
Alabama Adventure is currently open weekends and will begin fulltime operation May 22nd.

I missed the little comment about the trims being on the first drop.

IMO, that is actually the best possible place they could put them and not ruin the ride (assuming it's the only place they put them). The reason for my sudden happiness on this subject... trimming has less and less of an effect on final speed the earlier in the layout the trimming occurs due to the frictional losses along the way not being linear with initial velocity. To put it another way. If the bottom of the first drop reaches 50mph vs 55mph, the train will still hit the final brakes at virtually the same speed (approx. 30mph in this case).

Another positive is that, after the first drop (which should still be good in the backseat), their won't be any annoying trims on the course killing the pacing.

I don't get why they've had so much trouble with that second hill. The helix is the most insane part of the ride. I would think that would be the place needing constant retracking!
Title: Re: Pictures of Clementon
Post by: PcMan on May 15, 2008, 09:13:39 PM
FYI
rode by tonight and the parking lot was sealed
I guess this is why it was roped off near the back

Matt I agree this would be the best place for the trims.
just slowing it down some.
And yes I hate mid course trims they ruin the flow of the ride (The Beast, Mean Streak,Thunderhulk plus more)

I will see will try to be there at opening

Also I was told but not sure that the far turn around bank was lowered some  ? (this is one of the best parts of the ride when in the front seat)
I haven't seen this area yet but will take a look tomorrow.

go Flyers

( Rob aren't you a Mod ? )
Title: Re: Pictures of Clementon
Post by: WadeJ on May 15, 2008, 09:19:00 PM
El toro is proof of this after they big time slowed down the lift hill speed near the top but the ride still hits the same speed when all is said and done.  I just hope they are applied cleanly.
Title: Re: Pictures of Clementon
Post by: Medusa32 on May 15, 2008, 11:33:27 PM
Just got back from the Flyers game  :)

The first drop is the only place the trims are going to be I believe. The problem with the second hill is how it turns a little bit at the top of it the track gets destroyed.

We put the blue train onto the track first thing this morning. I had to put red onto the lift in order to put the other train on. And thanks to the trims being on red will probably be sitting on the lift for a few days.

At this point Hellcat is still scheduled to be ready for opening day. Trims should be on tomorrow, then consign will come out and program the breaks into the computer. They are air brakes.

Just some things I thought I would mention about the park:
1. New sound system is was completed today and sounds amazing. The only bad park is its supposed to play theme music for the new theme of the park.
2. The old carousel building that housed the bear show last year is the new arcade.
3. A ladder game like six flags had is where the old jack rabbit station was.
4. New basketball game is going where water wars use to be (across from office)
5. There will be a charge for parking this year.
6. Parking lot by Hellcat is the new employee parking area.

I think thats it for now but I will have more info before opening day!

Once we get settled in, and have furniture... anyone of you are welcome to crash at our place, Melissa might try to charge you money, and if she does, just give in ;)

My pass collection this year so far consists of SF, Busch and Kings Dominion. I'm most likely going to get a Clementon pass if I can upgrade a one day ticket to a pass (if I still like Tsunami as much I did before), and once in Florida I'll get a Universal Pass and maybe Disney.

Right now we have so few rides to open tomorrow its not even funny. We have 3 rides that as of tonight are just waiting to clear inspection and we think they will. Inspectors are supposed to be in first thing in the morning. The park is a week behind schedule and it shows in a pretty bad way. I just worked 15 hours then at the front gate i turned around and looked at the park and its just not ready. So please for anyone who has never been to the park dont come this weekend. Come next week when everything should be open.
