It is a giga coaster... Oh my god. Where is the thread where we bashed B&M making a hyper? We should all get walloped for not believing that it would happen.

The 115 deg. overbanked turn on the "smoking area" (for weed);)
Looks absolutly crazy. A strange choice considering Behemoth. But how can you be mad about Leviathan?

Who's coming to my place for back bacon?

YAAAAY!  B and M gigas!

Looks fun and better than CW's other B&M since there's no midcourse brake, but not enough to the layout. Not as impressive as I was expecting.

Post by: overlord on August 18, 2011, 10:30:32 AM
I agree Matt. It just looks like a simple mixture of Nitro and Goliath from SFOG. Good try but I don't think it can stand up to the ride excitements of Intamin Giga's

Hmm, Nice drop and three decent hills... I'll keep my Nitro. :)

I really don't get this.  I have to agree with Mr Alvey on this one and go with the idea that it wasn't intended for this park.  Knotts makes MUCH more sense.  I'm sure it will be a nice ride but they could have used that 28 million on something different.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: ChuckR on August 18, 2011, 11:25:49 AM
The first drop is gonna be awesome with those clamshell restraints. I'm still heading up there next year. I need to check out those Canadain parks.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born

no comment regarding this topic....

And why not?

because I do not see how the park is spending 28 million on this. I think this is the only time I am going to say this, but I agree that Alvey's speculation makes a lot of sense. As much as he says he "thinks" that is the situation, I am sure he has sources that have told him. I doubt he made this up himself.

I think it is a little funny how in this animation right at the beginning you see Behemoth first and then Leviathan in the background, almost as if Behemoth was just mirrored.

I don't get the ginormouus brake run at the end. What the hell is the point of that? They could have added at least another 1000ft of track to the end of the ride. Still, I'm SO glad there is no midcourse brake. This is how it should be done. No buzzkill like Behemoth has.

The layout looks like it should have a 200ft lift at best. It looks so short for the given height.

Post by: B-mac on August 18, 2011, 03:26:52 PM
I hope the Millennium Farce hills actually provide air. Matt is absolutely right that they could've added more to the ride. I nice few bunny hills like on Nitro and maybe a Goliath Helix to turn it back to the station, but that brake run looks to be about the length of Kingda Ka's and Top Thrill Dragster's, And you won't be running 120 mph into the brake run like either of the strata's.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on August 18, 2011, 05:47:21 PM
Maybe there was supposed to be two helices and another hop after the flat part of the brake run, but then Cedar Fair ran out of budget and decided to just end it there until they can afford to finish off the ride. ;)

A little late on this one..just got back from VT and my Timber Ripper credit.
I just watched the POV and felt like there had to be more.
28 million for 1:12 second ride.  I suppose they are paying a premium for that xtra 100 feet?

Since I don't feel like searching for Alveys comment anyone want to post a link?
Title: Re: Leviathan is born

I can't now on my phone but basically you really have to wonder if that was supposed to be the end of the ride. Something doesn't add up.

Anyone who comes up for a road trip is invited to my place for drinks, and bbq.

The first drop with these resatraints is money! Anyone think the turnaround looks like the dive loop right after the drop on drachen fire?
Title: Re: Leviathan is born

Regardless of Alvey's speculation, the decision to put it in Canada had to have been made months ago or Keith wouldn't have had enough time to make an animation. Those things take time and he animates the park as well so...

Keith does an amazing job on the animations. I am sure he was pissed that this ride was approximately 1:20 seconds so he couldn't make more dough off it!

Very good point Clint.  With that said, I'd now be curious to know how the application he uses works.  The ride itself could perhaps be in a separate layer or something.  Who knows (I guess other than Keith lol).

I'm not going to bother digging through all of the TPR threads but even without reading that, the first thing that went through my mind was Knotts when you consider what all of the coasters other CF parks currently have.

I guess with as crazy as many of us think this is, CP also has Magnum and MF in the same park but I think the argument is more that these are closer in size and style.  Well, plus they are both B&M.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on August 19, 2011, 12:36:25 PM
And Magnum is 11 years older than Millennium Force.

By the way, Keith uses 3D Studio Max for his animations.

Congrats! That's awesome. Is this number 2?

And technically, we only spent $400 for our four with the $100 co-pay. I'd be homeless without insurance though lol

Congrats and enjoy!

4th of July carries no significance up here. ;)

It would make for great irrony on this thread if I named my son Leviathan.

What do you have Wade? 3 boys and a girl was it?

Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: WadeJ on November 17, 2011, 08:00:16 AM
LOL something tells me mom wouldn't be as appreciative of the name Leviathan but yeah, at least the thread is fitting. We were "supposed" to be done @ 3 after the 2 boys and then the girl. Then I didn't get my stuff taken care of and oops, out pops #4. Still love him of course but wow did it change things. My boys bunk together now, which has been interesting and we can't go anywhere without the minivan lol.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: dkny6363 on November 17, 2011, 10:07:52 AM
Funnt we are shopping for a minivanright now. I figured because my two older kids are teens we wouldn`t need one overly often so if we didnt have one right away it wouldnt be a huge deal. But right now I am going to pick up the baby and we will need to make two trips from the hospital if Grandma isn`t there. Oh well Van by christams will be fine.

I wouldn't say number 4 was planned. But it was a consideration. My wife and I went back and forth on it. Usually on different sides, when she said yes, I said no. When She thougth no, I thought yes. I doubt many people now a days plan for 4. Another consideration was that I wanted a boy to carry on the family name. If you could have gaurenteed that if we had a forth it would have been a boy, I probably would have signed up long ago. I guess I would have to say it all worked out for the best.

In thread relatable news... Leviathan's drop looks doooope!

If you think Martins Comet is in the same league as RF2, then you need to get back to waldameer. Not saying it needs to be this time around. This will be a good excuse for me to get back to Marineland. haven't been in 20 years.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on November 21, 2011, 06:35:05 PM
It's the other way around. Comet is way underrated. It IS on par with RF2. I have been to
Waldy about 5 times in the last three years. I've ridden both coasters at their best and I've had my fill of RF2 for a while. I'd much rather ride Dragon Mountain. I'm not saying it's better. I just want to ride it more!

If you guys are serious about Ontario Place flume, you should come late august and combine it with the CNE. It's a GREAT fair attached to the flume place.

No Darien? I guess there is only so many places you can hit up.
Maybe I should meet up with you guys at Martins, cuz I find the comet atleast 2/10 worse than RF2. A starlight admission would suffice.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on November 21, 2011, 11:00:12 PM
Darien... been there, done that enough to last me a good while.

RF2 starts off amazing, but has a buzzkill of an ending. If the top second half was as intense as the first half, it would be in my top five. As is, it's not even really a top ten contender. Silver Comet is fairly consistent from beginning to end = better ride IMO.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: dkny6363 on November 22, 2011, 12:09:38 AM
Agree to dissagree!

Have you been on RF2 at night. I dont love it during the day. But at night. WOW

PS my cousin Marc thinks your nuts.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on November 22, 2011, 12:23:54 AM
Yes, I've ridden it at night many times on several occasions, even during ERT when everyone said it was amazing. It's a great ride, but leaves me very disappointed at the end. The first time I rode Silver Comet, I wasn't blown away by it and thought RF2 was better, but when I went back with Rob, it was bloody fantastic!

P.S. Marc is still cool. I'll let it slide. :)

I would have to somewhat agree with this as well. What is the drop angle of MF, it look greater than 80.

I think we all know that the drop is not MF's biggest problem ;) sorry Shoe.

I personally LOVE the look of the Intamin box track with all the triangle bracing. It's so detailed.

P.S. MF's drop angle is 80 degrees. But the crest is too long of a radius to give any powerful airtime. The B&M Millennium Force's drop looks "tighter" and should give a nice kick in the back seat. Likely the best first drop ever actually. Right now without a doubt that goes to Texas Giant 2.0, followed by i305.

I wonder if Leviathan will have that bend in the track on the first drop (like Diamondback and other newer B&M mega coasters). I don't think it will be very noticeable if there at all because of that box support going right through the spine on the first drop which the other B&M's don't have.

I have been thinking this. But I wasn't going to be the one starting the "best drop ever" conversation. I was trying to think about which drops could come close. To me the B&M mega's are the best drops now, and this one will be near 100 feet more. I know its only 76 feet taller, but the biggest drop is 215... This one will be at least 307. I also assumed I305 would be one of the best, along with MF. TG kind of escaped my thoughts but I don't doubt it. There are a couple of really good wood drops... Legend and RF2 are two of my favourites. El Toro is obviously awesome too.

^ Shoe.. There are pictures out there from the bottom looking up and it appears to be dead straight.

I am also not going to get into the best first drop conversation in this thread lol
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on November 29, 2011, 08:16:44 PM
El Toro, Texas Giant 2 and i305 have *by far* the most intense first drops of any coaster in the world. Nothing else has such a powerful airtime kick in the backseat nor sustains it as long as those three do.

Out of those three, i305 has the most sustained air, but the intensity of the force is stronger on both Toro and Giant. And between those two, Giant wins simply for the lose-fitting restraints.
If i305 had B&M restraints, it would absolutely be THE best drop in all of coasterdom, as it was before the soft over-the-shoulder straps were added (the old hard ones were much loser and didn't hold you down the way the new ones do). That is why I have high expectations for the awesomeness of Canada's new first drop, despite the rest of the ride doing much to excite me.

I saw it in person for the first time today. The pictures don't do it justice.

This coaster would have been so much better if they had put a couple smaller bunny hops after the brake run. Wouldn't have made it much longer length wise but would make a huge difference ride experiencewise. Still cool none the less but the layout is short.

Yeah, the perspective is kinda tricky. The placement of the ride is great. It's too bad they didn't save the Behemoth name for this ride--much more fitting in hindsight.

This construction scheduale should do great wonders to dispell the myth of Canadian winters.

Matt... I agree with that behemoth name thing. I still think that 2 foot trench might provide a surprise that makes Leviathan more fitting. Not sure what though. Im okay with it as long as Ziz is an awesome flying coaster, and not a 400' B&M.

im just worriedabout how they will protect riders on the train from the punk kids that think it would be funny to throw a quarter at the track as the train passes by the first drop trench and the hammerhead turnaround. im pretty sure getting hit by a quarter at 92mph will do some damage.

It's because it's not an elliptical overbanked turn like Intamin makes. It's more like a straight climb into an overbanked turn at the top and then a straight drop out of it.

Very near completion.. 2nd airtime hill done, all thats left if the left turn to the break run. This hill seems very looong, and drawn out. At 70 mph it should still give a good punch.

The fact that Cedar Fair finally pony'd up the money for B&M to build a 300-footer instead of going with the cheaper Intamin product leads me to believe they won't be purchasing anymore Intamin coasters, at least not for their high-profile high-attendance parks where minimizing down time is crucial.

Just so there is no false hope, there is about a 1% chance that the log ride will be there in 2017. Apparently this park is costing us over 20 mil a year to keep open. As it is government owned.

84 days!

So what kind of itinerary are you guys looking at? Or have the details not been worked out at all?

I would hit up Martins the night of the drive out... But thats just me. You won't be able to do that at Marineland because I think they close around 5-6. At least the ticket office does. I am really excitted about ML as I haven't been since I was about 14. Certainly much more interested in coasters now.

Are you thinking 2 part days at CW? Or cram it all in 1 day. Im guessing the plan WAS to break up one day with the flume.

Leviathan's track is complete.. Pictures can be found in the obvious locations (screamscape/cwmania)

Was across the border today and found out something somewhat interesting... You can only see Dragon Mt. from the US side of the border. All you can see from the canadian side is the drop tower on the top of a mountain. Almost drove past martins but didn't want to pay tolls.

One last thing... Is it true you don't tip alot at restraunts in america? For example I went to Applebees today and the bill was only 27 bucks.. I left 34 which is maybe a little high percent wise.. But amount, I would never leave lesss than 5 unless the service was barf. Whats the story?
Our waitress was like overly thankful and kept asking are you sure I can't get you some change?

No, Tipping IS a big deal in the US. 15-20% of the bill is standard.  I always try to give 20% unless the service is bad or if it's a buffet where all they do is bring you your drink.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: AV Matt on February 09, 2012, 08:29:07 PM
In Scandinavia you just round up to the nearest round number. Basically no more than a fifty cent tip.
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: dkny6363 on February 09, 2012, 11:42:18 PM
Maybe I was just off due to how cheap the bill was at Applebees... Here's a tip, cross the border and go to applebee's and prepare to pay not 20% more, but double! In other words never go to applebees here. Yeah 15% here is about right. I usually up the % on cheaper meals. Just cuz a meal only costs $25 bucks doesn't mean the poor girl should only get 3-4 bucks. 7 is my minimum for decent service.

Also the trains are in on Leviathan. One thing I noticed is that the zero car doesn't have the face on it like in the renderings. Do they get stickered on afterwards? Or is it just a case of renderings are not 100% acurate.

Hershey Wildcat!

They often add parts to the trains later.

The trains are just a base coat of paint when they get shipped into the park, Skyrush has the same thing (in terms of basic train color) and so do many other rides that have been built in the last 15 or so years (hell maybe 20 if you look at B:TR). Rides like Apollo's Chariot and Dueling Dragons are likely exceptions since the designs they have (Apollo's Zero-Car and Dragon's 0-Car and wheel-housings) are definitely not something a park can just sticky-glue on and peel right off.

The Pov does look a little slow. I find all BM megas look a little non interse on the pov's. The PR dep said it has been running much faster since that video was shot.

On top of Dino's and Leviathan the park is adding a Cirque type show in wonderland theatre. As well they are bringing back the starlight spectacular from last year. Finally nice to be spoiled.

I was already not that excited about this one as it didn't seem to make sense in this park and it still just dissapointed me. This thing is slow. Its gonna need a little more than warming up and some break in to fix itself.

Just compare the pacing to nitro on film. Also kinda funny how nitro still takes longer to reach the top of its lift. I love it slow lift.

This video looks more accurate to the speed of the ride than the other offride video which has a strange framerate inconsistency that points towards being doctored.

I can also confirm for you that during that pov that the trims were turned off so this is actually it without trims. A PR representative answered the question about whether the trims were on.

Here's one more although the quality is kinda weird it gives you a nice wide angle of the whole ride and its after the ride has had some time to warm up.

I think the newer B&M Mega trains would have looked more appropriate for the size of this coaster. Looks sort of funny.

I wonder if B&M did anything different when designing the chain lift since this is so much taller than their other coasters. I remember that Morgan explained how they used two separate chains for Steel Dragon 2000 because one long one would have been too heavy.

Although I have heard that, I also heard that they wanted two block sections on the lift due to the very long time it took to go up the lift and the large amount of capacity they wanted the ride to achieve as Japan is very densely populated.

Once opened the trims will always be on. However these are a new type of trim that only brake when they need to.

^Which means on days when it's running really fast we'll never get those "awesome" rides it is capable of giving. Everyone will have the same ride essentially. Unless of course... it gets hit by lightning and the maint. crews don't notice for a week or two, then you'll have those brakeless rides :) (Right Matt?)

That powered coaster is badass! Actually a lot of my coaster friends have said the same thing. I didn't believe them until I rode it.

B&M Millennium Force may have the best first drop. I will give you that. But right now, that honor goes to New Texas Giant, followed by i305.

The haunts are really good. Highly recommended! I think my favorite was the one through rapids ride.

I have heard that about the rapid ride haunt... I saw the layout waitind in line for the rapids ride during the day. I always thought it would be cool to run a rapids ride through a haunt. Temperature could play a role in that.

Leviathan will have the best drop.

Yeah the mine train is badass... for a mine train.

"Canada's Wonderland has confirmed that the Leviathan roller coaster, due to open on April 27, 2012, will feature a 100-foot tunnel at the base of its first drop."

At least "At the base of the first drop" pinpoints its location.
After the first drop could have been any where.

Time goes by fast...I can't believe you only have 9 days left until that ride.

Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: dkny6363 on April 28, 2012, 01:11:54 AM
K so I'm going to give the straight goods. No Fanboy Review.

So I get there slightly early. As soon as I show up gates are opened and crowd very small. (WINNING) however I soon realize that this is because it is as cold as I am a bad person ;)

We get walked by security to the line... It was slow and erie. 3 girls started to run past... security nabs them and despite the fact it was never announced as a  "line" they get brought to the back of the line. (Amazing Moment!)

So the ride.. Statue is really cool, Que area is nice looking but nothing amazing. Well done though. We wait for half hr but mostly because they were just putting extra trains on. We actually got to wait for whatever row we wanted. Although they were pushing the empty rows. We went for the back row. However it was a train that was just brought off the shelf. (Raw Deal) Then I get stapled (also raw deal) It's pretty exciting times at this point but again really cold! The lift goes about in between Millennium and a normal B@M Mega's as far as speed goes. First drop, absolutely incredible. No doubt its the best drop around. The first bank is really good and you really come out flying. Then that low to the ground hill.. Highlight of the ride post drop. You carry air though it and then get yanked and twisted at the end. Also there is a dirty head chopper not in animations. So far so good. Now comes the first camelback... This is where the coldness started to take effect, also the fairly standard BM elements. The camelback is obviously nice but the train didn't smash into tonight. Hoping its from the cold. No trims were hitting on the first hill. Then the crazy hammerhead turnaround... Not amazing on the first lap. Really big though, and very inversion like. Then the twist back had nice speed, second Camel back was better than expected and carried air steady, the last bank was pretty meh. and you don't pull air into the break run. However the speed seamed really down on this lap. I would give it like an 8. It kind of reminded me of Shambala animation ;)

The second time I rode it was like near dark and still only a 20 minute wait. The park was really dead. I rode in row 3 and it was a little better. Much better speed, and especially hit the cammelbacks much better.

The last time was in the Dark, front seat. REALLY good. Much faster again, head chopper on the high speed turn was awesome. Ran really good until the final turn which was not good on any lap tonight. I would proably give this lap a 9 or better.

Overall I thought it was kind of running bad. It did speed up towards the end but never seemed nearly as fast as it will be. The perception that the layout is kind of lame has Merritt. The elements are really good though.

I would not say its in the league of any great woodies. But I would say it is right up there with my favourite steel coasters (Behemoth, and Storm Runner) but certainly no Voyage, or El Toro. I would guess its not in the league with Texas Giant and I would bet most of you will like I305 more than this. I would bet most people will think it is the best BM mega once it gets going. If not just because of the drop.

In summary a potentially great coaster but not epic. Probably has top 5 steel potential on both golden tickets, and hawkers.

As Ken said watch out for that first drop... It's a doozy.

So no air on the second low to ground hill, just on the first one?
Title: Re: Leviathan is born
Post by: dkny6363 on April 29, 2012, 12:56:52 PM
The second low to the ground hill is pretty decent... There wasn't enough speed that night to see what it will really do. The first low hill is almost like a bunny hill and banks hard left at the end, where as the 2nd one is a steady bank the whole way around and then straightens out at the end.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the middle rows seem to give decent rides as well. Tons of air in row 3 anyways. On behemoth the middle 4 rows are all pointless seats for myself. I really only ride in the back row ever.

Post by: Blackhand1001 on May 01, 2012, 04:00:40 PM
I made the unfinished ending in photoshop. This would have made the ride one of the best coasters in the world in my opinion if it had this and a little more speed in the first half.

Just rode Leviathan today after waiting nearly 2 hrs. (firework day)

From the first time I rode till today it's a totally different ride. Absolutly flying tonight. Significantly better than Millenium Force. Even those good rides on mille late at night on a hot day. Makes Nitro look like a childs toy ;)

The park was sooo busy today. Only went on levi, and Thunder Run. TR was almost an hr wait. Well worth it Matt?

So I don't know if you guys have Wagjag or Groupon where you are but I found this. I buy Wagjags all the time. They exagerate the value before the discount, and this doesn't include september but its worth a look. Chances are prices will be even better if it is Sept. You're coming.

So i've hidden this thing 9 times now. It has surprised me that the front is the CLEAR cut winner on which end of this you want to ride. You just dont get pulled over the first drop like you do on Behemoth. The benefit of leviathan is there are no bad seats. There are only 2 or 3 rows I would ever ride on behemoth. When they suggest me an empty row I laugh and walk straight to the back.

Anyways back to Leviathan. The first half of the ride (now that it's hot out) is blazing fast. I mean really fast. All the way up untill the big overbank. The ride is still fun after that, but its not out of control like the first half. Wait times have been really good. Usually wait under an hr. Only once did I wait more, and that was on a firework day.

Other notes on wonderland. Sledgehammer has been up and running lately. Don't hold your breath it will be open by the fall though.

Watched the new Cirque show this past friday. VERY good show. Has anyone seen one similar to this? I have heard other parks have had them before. It was just a half hr of great great entertainment for the whole family.

Minebuster still sucks ;(

But, but, but I thought it was going to be the best drop in the business?!?!? ;)

New Texas Giant still rules supreme!

P.S.
1) I am a dog person. ;)
2) Behemoth doesn't do what I expect a great ride to do (nor does Levy from the sound of things).
3) Canada is a really cool guy and I hope we get to share some rides again this season.
4) Vortex is still the best coaster in the park methinks.
5) El Toro is fun.

;) :) ;)

The levy drop is still awesome. It just doesn't have that pull over the top probably due to the shorter trains.

Vortex is a great ride, but come on matt.

Not sure about hotels... I know there is a million of them though.

They have no possible chance of doing this.... They are not wooden

They don't have to be wood to be good. It helps though.

No they don't have to be wood to be good. They have to be wood to be epic.

Levi, and behemoth are good. On the right day they are great. They are not epic.

Why just hyper Bmac? Lets go strata wood

New Texas Giant is epic (only steel coaster I will say that about).

Both the Wonderlandian B&Ms have sucky endings. No way they can be great to me. But good, sure, just like El Toro. ;)

did you read my traveling times post?

But el toro doesn't have a sucky ending...Just a sucky middle.

No El Toro's last two hills are the suckiest of them all.

All I remember about el toros ending is that twisting mayham. I guess there are two bumps after that. I wouldn't say the ending is sucky.

Leviathans ending isnt sucky. It just ends too soon. You could say the last 3rd of the ride is sucky. But its more like it's just less excitting than the first 2/3. Some days you get a huge airtime pop flying into the break run.

Personal Note: Matt does not like ejector air when combined with Intamin harnesses.

Levi doesnt have ejector air. Just a ton of nice floater air. The bunnyhop can be ejectorish.

Matt doesn't like ejector air if it means he can't move around in the seat and enjoy a wooden coaster the way they are meant to be.  I prefer big floater air and a loose restraint.

But anyhow a solid ending with punch all the way to the end is key. El Toro's twisters are awesome then it dies before it even hits the brakes. Ruins it for me.

Isn't the last 3rd of the ride THE brake run?

^ haha ok ok... let me reprase. The last 1/3 of the riding experience brake run excluded.

No tight restraints on levy Matt. However the floor is about an inch lower than on other BM megas, making the old tippy toes on the floor keeps the stapling down is harder to pull off.

I've deffinatly been stapled more on levy than on behemoth. But its still only clamshell stapling.
