Supposedly for a one year renovation effort:

Wow!

Better get back to SFoT this year before they ruin it. ;)

I do like Shapiro's comment about making it faster though. All of the trim brakes kill the raw power of the ride. I would love to get a trimless ride. If it's going to take a year to do, it sounds like they want to completely rebuild the ride from scratch which is probably their best option. I hope they keep a wood structure and don't opt for a steel one. And I'm guessing it will sport single-bench cars, so perhaps The Gravity Groups Timberliners...

I'm just hoping it isn't temporarily closing like certain parts of Great Adventure and Kentucky Kingdom have "temporarily closed."

Nah.. they are specifically targeting this ride to celebrate their anniversary so I think were safe.  Honestly, I'm happy to see Six Flags reinvesting in the existing rides.  Even Disney has to suck it up and gut Space Mountain and rebuild it so they must intend on keeping the Giant.  Now if only we could see RT getting the same treatment :)

Major redesign on Texas Giant coaster begins at Six Flags Over Texas:

Quote
...There will be big changes will be to the track and cars. Martindale promised a steeper, faster ride loaded with special effects.

“The profile is going to be substantially different,” Martindale said. “We’re probably going to change 15 percent of the track configuration.”...

Ugh. I'm not liking what I'm hearing. The ride needs no re-profiling at all. It just needs to go at its design speed and be smoothed out a bit. Then it will be a top 5 woodie again.

Special effects... yuck.

special effects have NO place on wood. Terminator Salvation look OKish but it's just unnecessary.

I wish I liked that ride. I saw it's potential, but I see this as a plus for the ride regardless of what they do to it.

Yeah, that sucks about Chiller...I hate to see it like that. Hey, so we should get a group picture or something ok. I'll call you later!

If it was going fast and smooth, you would have liked it about as much as Voyage, Rob.

Looks like a very good ride, hope they keep it to The Texas Giant instead of renaming it like the other rides that got special effects.

If they want to "plus" a ride, they should do it to Titan. It can't get any worse.

You must of heard from the wrong person. Everyone who told me said that it was the worst hyper coaster ever.

It's tall and has POWERFUL positive G's in the two helices, but it only has about three hills and one spot of airtime. It's not my kind of ride at all. But it's still better than a Boomerang. I'd much rather ride the kiddie mine train though.

there's a lot of things better than a boomerang, IMO. I've never been on Titan, so I'm going off of others' opinions.

Titan's cousin (Twin?)Goliath @ Magic Mountain was pretty lame. The centrifuge helix was great...but the drop left airtime to be desired, the hills lacked air, and it didn't really carry it's speed well.

Let's hope the new trains don't do that to the Texas Giant.

Titan and Goliath are virtually twins, but Titan has an extra helix to burn off some of the speed going into the midcourse block brake. It's kind of funny looking at Titan's turnaround (2nd hill) as you can tell it was designed to cross over Colossus like Goliath does at SFMM. It's a shame they didn't reverse the entry and exit to the turnaround for a nice kick of airtime. As is the drop is blended into the turn like GCI used to do a lot.

I never will understand why they have a midcourse block brake on some rides. It just ruins the momentum of the entire ride.

It makes it possible/easier to run 3 or more trains.
