Scream Machine Closing Forever July 18th
« on: July 05, 2010, 12:50:34 PM »
While we are still waiting for an official press release, it is now known that Scream Machine's last day of operation, ever, will be Sunday July 18th.

The park has posted the following on their Facebook page:

Quote
Hey guys, Scream Machine will close July 18 to make room for a major new attraction in 2011. We'll offer double rides on GASM July 11 & 18. We'll host an ERT (Exclusive Ride Time) event on July 18, 10 p.m.-11:30 p.m. to invited guests; to be invited, see this contest

The contest mentioned is as follows:

Quote
•WHO: 25 winners will be chosen; winners may bring a guest.

•WHAT: Show us your biggest SCREAM face! Post a photo or video of you screaming as though you were on Great American Scream Machine at www.facebook.com/sixflagsgreatadventure. Guests that shoot a SCREAM video or include patriotic items are more likely to be chosen as winners. There is no limit to the amount of entries. Winners will be announced July 15, 2010. Be creative, have fun and keep it clean :)

•WHEN:   10 p.m.-11:30 p.m., July 18, 2010

•WHERE:   Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure.

•WHY:   To make room for a new attraction in 2011, we’re celebrating Scream Machine with the send off it deserves!

•Event Details:Guests invited to the event will receive ERT (exclusive ride time) from 10 p.m.-11 p.m. Seats on the front and back row of the last train of the last ride (dispatched at 11 p.m.) will be auctioned off; other seats during the last ride will be $50 each—details TBA—and all proceeds will benefit the NRCMA (National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives)!

So as no one is confused...what is the LAST day of operation?  The 18th or the 17th?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!   >:(

I appreciate the park giving official notice and having a sendoff celebration of sorts, but I still hate this decision.

Think we'll head to the park on the 18th for a couple more rides.  We'll just go in the morning though--not staying to the end.  Anyone else?

I'll likely be there for the ert and a little while before park closing. I don't know why but I really want to be there for the end. I know its not a person and all but this will be tough lol

Indeed it will.  I have had the experience of being at several of these last rides at various parks.  Tough indeed.

At least, though, this time next year, there will almost certainly be another great adventure to look forward to, unlike at Geauga Lake, Whalom Park, Miracle Strip, Lesourdsville Lake, Williams Grove, Libertyland, yes, even Astroworld and Kentucky Kingdom...the list goes on and on...

Be careful.  Son of Beast was/is unique...and I am quite sure Dick Kinzel would be happy to sell it to Mr. Weber and company...which would be very ironic!

=(   I am definitely sad to see GASM go. Hopefully will be there the 18th to say goodbye.

Additional information from the new Six Flags blog:

WARNING: THIS BLOG IS BEST ENJOYED WITH THE BYRDS — TURN, TURN, TURN PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND. PLEASE OPEN ITUNES BEFORE PROCEEDING.

As an avid fan of Lost and those McDonald's Shamrock Shakes I can only get in March, I am painfully aware that all good things must come to an end. It's always bittersweet. You're sad to see something go but also really excited about what it's giving way to (in the Shamrock Shake's case, it's usually the McRib!). Well now the time has come to turn the page on Great Adventure's classic corkscrew coaster, The Great American Scream Machine.

Great American Scream Machine opened in New Jersey April 1989 as the tallest and fastest looping coaster in the world. For nostalgia's sake, check out this vintage commercial touting its then unheard of 68 mph top speed. I distinctly remember catching this commercial during Saturday Morning Cartoons and cursing my small stature. Reaching 54" was the sole reason I started drinking so much milk.

On July 18, G.A.S.M. will officially close up shop. In order to give it a proper send off, all guests will be receiving double rides for the next two Sundays. We'll also be offering an exclusive ride time event on the 18th from 10:00 – 11:30 p.m. If you're interested in scoring an invite, check out Great Adventure's Facebook Page (or you could always just become Six Flags' blogger and tell your boss you need to be there "for research purposes".)

For the collectors in the audience, we're also happy to announce we'll be auctioning off the front and back row of the last dispatched train exclusively on eBay. The rest of the 24 seats will soon be available to purchase for $50 each right here on sixflags.com. All proceeds will benefit the National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives. If I knew collecting roller coasters was a viable option as a kid I would have had significantly less stamps and significantly more friends. Learn from my mistakes, people!

So why, exactly, are we retiring Great American Scream Machine? Well, let's just say we have big plans for the space it's currently occupying. And let's also just say these big plans will premiere in 2011. More info to come but, for now, let's all congratulate G.A.S.M on its amazing 21 year run and give it the send off it truly deserves.

The front and back are up one eBay:
Scream Machine Closing Forever eBay Auction

Now what they should do is give loosing bidders first dibs on the remaining 24 seats.

Some people seem to think they are auctioning off the physical car as a keepsake to take home.
