Son Of Beast loopless
« on: December 13, 2006, 02:26:53 PM »
The only GOOD part about SOB is no more :(

The loop has been removed and they plan to lighten the trains to reduce wear and tear on the structure.

More from - http://www.extremepki.com/

In other strange news, in 1 week, a total of 3 coasters have had their loops removed.  Cali Screamin for the construction of Midway Mania underneath the ride (the loop is coming back though!) and Batman The Ride @ SFNO is sitting there without its loop right now.  I guess they are either inspecting/fixing the ride for a potential reopening of the park (unlikely) or it is being dismantled and sold/moved to another park.

Strange week....

Here is a full report with some scary photos - http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061213/NEWS01/312130022

Edit:  I highly recommend reading the PDF file on the above news site.  The detail of this report is amazing.  It also makes me never want to ride SOB ever again LOL

The funniest part is that last April Fool's day, Extreme PKI said SoB was missing the loop.

If another accident occurs on SOB in spite of these modifications, they will be tearing it down.

http://www.pkicentral.com has a much better write up, including a long dissertation by one Shaggy, that I bet the park wishes had not been posted...He compares Son of Beast to Rattler, and predicts a similar future.

That's what happens when you build a Mega woodie "in-house"
Another reason to use a Steel Structure and wood track.
I don't feel the difference.
THe ride at the point of the "dip" must have felt like the SFNE Cyclone dips.
Yes I missed riding it by 2 weeks,   I guess next year.
I think the ride may be faster without the loop but I'm sure they will trim the hell out of it like they did with the beast.
I think the Beast should be re profiled with banked turns in 1 or 2 spots so as to eliminate the trim brakes. THe Beast is top 5 coaster until you hit the trims then its a top 10-15.

Those trims on Beast seem to vary a great deal throughout the season, or even the time of day.

My 2 laps on it were insanely fast with little to know trims at all.  I also hear it tends to get through them better towards the evening.  However, Cedar Fair is now in charge so that could all be different now :(.

I was told they are magnetic and can't be turned on/off  ??
After reading about it (the beast) for the past 25 years
I finally got on it this year  I think it was 4 times.(2 in a row get out of front seat walk towards exit jump in any empty seats LOL).
I loved the Beast but as soon as it's getting good a trim steps in to slow the pace.
But I could only Imagine how it was without the trim breaks, I guess it was like the Helix  that out of control feeling and awesome speed.
We rode the Beast one day then Rode The Voyage the next they are similar in that they both have the "out of control" feeling which I love in a woodie  as long as my back is ok or I'm loaded with Ibuprofen LOL.
I plan on heading out there in 2007 to hit both up again and to Finally get on SOB

That out of control feeling is exactly what got me hooked on the Texas Giant.  Somewhere I have a POV I took from the front seat of it so I'll see if I can dig that up.  I rode Beast 2 years ago so I guess it is very possible that things have changed since then.

The Beast definitely wasn't that bad of a ride. I mean I wouldn't rank it in my top 10, but its good.

I loved the Beast
I would have loved it better if my back wasn't whacked out  :'(.
Wade if you liked the "out of control" ride you will Love The Voyage especially from the turn around to the finale finish and better in the dark. I came off the ride sweating  8)

We could always call it..."The Worst Ride Ever".

I'm still curious at the trains its supposedly getting. GCI Millennium Flyer trains would not work and I doubt GCI would put those beauties on this train wreck (Pun!).

Probably some custom PCT's or something...

Son of Beast is now Open

> Will you ride the Son of Beast?

MASON ? Son of Beast lives again ? only it's a bit less beastly.

Kings Island reopened the popular wooden roller coaster at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Fourth of July crowds, but without its famed 118-foot loop.

The coaster was closed after an accident sent 27 riders to area hospitals in July of last year. An Ohio Department of Agriculture report pointed to a design flaw that caused a wooden beam to crack because it couldn't support the weight of riders.

The failure of that beam led two others to give way, causing a slight dip in the track that injured riders, the report stated.

Park officials say the design flaw has been fixed and removing the loop went beyond the recommendations of the report.

Even without its loop, Son of Beast "is still the tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the world," said Kings Island spokesman Matt Shafer.

"The reaction (from riders) was very, very positive today," Shafer said. "That's one of the reasons we took our time" in reopening the attraction.

in your opinion it's better or worse than before?
even if I don't like loops at all, I think that SOB is better with the loop, because now it's only the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the world, but nothing special...
