PATCO fire - again
« on: December 18, 2006, 10:34:40 PM »
Fortunately, I wasn't anywhere near it this time.  Though it did delay my commute this morning.

I have major anxiety issues ever since I was trapped in the burning car the last time and now this happens lol

Anyway, just though you SJ locals would find this amusing as they continue to make station improvements, new ticket system sloooooooowwly being implemented and other upgrades while the cars are literally rotting before our eyes. ::)

PATCO Back To Normal After Train Fire
(CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA PATCO Speedline passengers bound for Philadelphia were forced to evacuate the train while crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge Monday after the conductor detected smoke.

"It was an urban adventure," said passenger Beth Enger of Collingswood, N.J.

Authorities said just after 6 a.m. a conductor aboard a westbound PATCO train detected smoke in the front car of a three car train while en route to Philadelphia and brought the train to an emergency stop on the Ben Franklin Bridge over the Delaware River.

"We got on the train and there was burning smell and we got off on the catwalk on the bridge," said Enger.

The 35 passengers were then evacuated to a catwalk area on the bridge high above the Delaware River as a precautionary measure.

"You could see the water under you, and it's a little chilly up there and then you see the fire trucks and all the equipment com out and you get a little bit worried," said Vincent Cieslik of Gloucester Township, N.J.

Emergency response personnel from the Delaware River Port Authority closed two westbound lanes of the bridge during the incident. The lane closures brought traffic to a halt for many commuters heading into the city. The lanes were reopened after 7 a.m. and the train continued on its way to 8th and Market Streets in Philadelphia.

No injuries were reported and while an investigation is underway, PATCO said it appears it could have been a failure in the motor.

Yeah.  The PATH trains up this way are a much better interstate transit system.  I would have thought that Philly would want something cleaner.  Then I saw the SEPTA subway...

Hopefully this will force them to get everything up to par.  That's a real shame.

Youd think they would learn the first time, guess not

^ The PATH trains up here are true workhorses, they are usually always running, rain or shine, but ocassionally there are delays.

NYC could not tolerate something like this, its too big of a city with too much bussiness

Wade I seen this the other day and was thinking if you were on it.
After living in S Jersey about 10 miles from the Bridge I
never did walk over it (the pedestrian walk above the train)
it's been about 20 years since I took Patco Speedline to Philly.
We used to take it to see concerts at the Spectrum from the Lindenwold station.

The Patco speedline no way compares to the System in place in NY City(biggest in the world).
the Speedline we call it here is only one straight line going from the S.Jersey area into Center city philly and the Stadiums  then you can get off and board the Philly Subways if needed. You can also take the speedline to the Lindenwold station then take Amtrack to Atlantic city.

The PATH is a lot better than the PATCO.  We have a line from Newark to the WTC, and three other lines that go from Jersey to NYC in various places.  The PATH just got new trains and ticket machines too.  Much better than the PATCO complex lever system. :P

The PATH has to be the best way to get into the city from Jersey, $3 round trip isn't that bad.  I love how you can use the metro card at the ticketing machines.  :D

Wow $3 can't beat that.
So if I ever wanted to go into the city best to park at a Jersey Path ?
As I heard parking anywhere in NY city is outrageous.

I'd give you an answer, but I never parked at a PATH station and that part of the site seems to be broken.

I know that in Hoboken there is a parking lot right by the PATH station, and there is a garage a few blocks away.  I forgot what the prices for those are.

And whats so great about the PATH trains is that it brings you right under Madison Square Garden in Penn Station, once in Penn Station is very easy to get on the subway and get to where you have to go
