Cyclone Alert!
« on: April 15, 2007, 01:30:42 AM »
Word has gotten to me that the Coney Island Cyclone may be having its last season of operation.  I can't find any topic of it now, but word has it that this fall may be the last time to ride Cyclone.  A historic date that will be!
Great Adventure...taking over the world one record at a time.

Im not too sure, I thought that it was going to run through all the destruction/construction?

Also, I am not worried about this really, it is a Landmark, sure it may not run, but it is NOT going to the graveyard

No one is planning on closing the Cyclone.

First of all, it is owned by New York City.

Second, it is nationally historic.

Third, too many remember what befell the Thunderbolt.

What year did the Thunderbolt close?

It closed in 1982.

Sadly, it was destroyed during IAAPA back in 2000, on November 17.  I was with Colleen Whyte when we found out.  We were both near tears.

How very sad indeed.

Wow.  It closed in 1982 but still remained until 2000?  It must have been in bad shape when they finally tore it down.  Does anyone have any pictures of it towards the end.  I think it would be interesting to see.

I only got to visit Coney Island for the first time in 2005.  I loved the old time feel of it.  So sad that this will be the last year for Astroland.

One thing I love about the Cyclone is that you can reride as many times as you want in the same car as long as you pay the guy when the train arrives back in the station.  It really makes the people waiting in line mad but is great if you are like me and love to go over and over again.

Thunderbolt was right next to the parachute tower and Keyspan Park, today there is a GIANT empty space where it once stood and believe it or not you can still barely see the outline of it in the way the grass is grown it....

This is not true! I work at Astroland, and I can tell you this! The Cyclone is a Landmark and it has the lease on that property for 9 years, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The City has said many times that the Cyclone will be staying.

Do you really believe everything politicians say?
Are you ready to send those commies running back to their mommies?

I do believe that it's a NYC landmark and it's protected though. ;)

Here you go Pete, a Thunderbolt picture from www.forgotten-ny.com

If you're interested in SBNO coasters you can still check out the Comet at Lincoln park in Dartmouth Mass that's been closed since 87. The lift hill fell down but the rest is still standing.  You can also Google for pictures to check it out.

As for the Cyclone, I agree with it's not going anywhere any time soon.

HAHA! That's my Aunt Mae's house under there. If no one believes me, ask RobbW about my Coney history.
