Trip to MD for Alpine Coaster
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:44:39 AM »
Bubba talked about riding a mountain coaster for weeks. Sue posted her pictures of a trip to Jiminy Peak in MA. He kept calling and texting and wore me down. I called Matt and we set a time to meet right away. After the Philly car show (Pics anyone?) Matt slept over Bubba's house. He's not allowed on my parents furniture.

We left at 8:30 am for the trip to Wisp Ski Resort in Mc Henry, MD. It takes only 4 hours to get to the coaster. I love trips like this.

Bubba brought a kid along to add more weight going down the mountain.

Here's the family at Cici's.

It's a real crappy dive.

But Matt seems ok with it.

National Lampoon Vacation soundtrack

It was relaxing so Bubba took a nap.

Matt, Bubba and I made it.

Strangers.

The kid came prepared.

Bubba and Hannah. (We found out her name)

Matt!

Bubba and Hannah.

Matt!

Hannah enjoys the view

It scared Bubba.

Nice!...A coaster you can ride in the snow.
But I think I'll wait until it is a little warmer out.

How fast does that get going?
Any other CRAZY people were riding that day?

You might want to look into taking up skiing!

Yes, you're in control of the brakes on the alpine coasters.

I used to ski in the past, but haven't been in the past couple years.  I took one lesson the first time I went back in high school, but I don't think I ever learned properly.  I'm just starting to feel that it's not worth it since there's so many things beyond your control that could go wrong when skiing(people cutting you off, bare spots, ice patches, etc.).

Snowmobiling is something I'd like to do more of.  We only tried that once at the Ceasar's pocono resorts, but it was a blast.  The only problem is that most of the ski resorts around here don't offer it.  I think I did see it listed on the Wisp website though.

You can see the brake handles on the side of the car in this picture. You put them down to go, and pull back to stop.

Great trip report guys.  The brown setup at the end was freaking hilarious.

I really need to get there and do this but I did have one question - Is this more of a coaster than a alpine slide?  I had a blast and the now closed Alpine slide at Camelback mostly because of how it was able to slide back and fourth in the track.  This seems to be more of a fixed course track.  Is it as much fun as a traditional slide?

I realize it probably greatly reduces the chance of accidents by locking the cart to the course and therefore allowing them to buckle you to the cart but part of the fun of alpine slides is that out-of-control factor.

Going around some of the turns on the alpine coaster at full speed is a bit scary, but I don't think you have nearly the same out-of-control feeling you have on an alpine slide.  I do like alpine slides, but I'm always a bit cautious on them because I've known people who have had serious wipe-out's and I don't want to be one of those people.

If you like the alpine slides, you should go to Jiminy Peak because they have both the alpine slide and alpine coaster.

Yea I thought those levers where the brakes. Is it possible to flip the car over from going to fast around the turns?

/\  That would be the Alpine Slides that do that :D

That was the confusion I had.  I was thinking Alpine Slide and Alpine Coaster were one in the same.  They aren't.  Learn something new everyday lol

The slides you can VERY easily flip over by going to fast on a turn.  My brother actually burned skin off his legs and back after it went out from under him and he kept going down the track.  Of course, it was his fault, we didn't sue and after some laughs, we got right back on :)

I still want to try this but I have a feeling I'd like the slides better.  Although one bonus is just the fact that this is open in the winter ;D

The slides are definitely scarrier since you can very easily wipe out (I've come very close), but since the coasters are locked on to the rails with upstops and you're strapped in, you can go full speed and know you're staying on the ride. I like 'em both a lot.
