July 9, 2010Mike Scollins, Six Flags Social Media AgentWARNING: THIS BLOG IS BEST ENJOYED WITH THE BYRDS — TURN, TURN, TURN PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND. PLEASE OPEN ITUNES BEFORE PROCEEDING.As an avid fan of Lost and those McDonald's Shamrock Shakes I can only get in March, I am painfully aware that all good things must come to an end. It's always bittersweet. You're sad to see something go but also really excited about what it's giving way to (in the Shamrock Shake's case, it's usually the McRib!). Well now the time has come to turn the page on Great Adventure's classic corkscrew coaster, The Great American Scream Machine.Great American Scream Machine opened in New Jersey April 1989 as the tallest and fastest looping coaster in the world. For nostalgia's sake, check out this vintage commercial touting its then unheard of 68 mph top speed. I distinctly remember catching this commercial during Saturday Morning Cartoons and cursing my small stature. Reaching 54" was the sole reason I started drinking so much milk.On July 18, G.A.S.M. will officially close up shop. In order to give it a proper send off, all guests will be receiving double rides for the next two Sundays. We'll also be offering an exclusive ride time event on the 18th from 10:00 – 11:30 p.m. If you're interested in scoring an invite, check out Great Adventure's Facebook Page (or you could always just become Six Flags' blogger and tell your boss you need to be there "for research purposes".)For the collectors in the audience, we're also happy to announce we'll be auctioning off the front and back row of the last dispatched train exclusively on eBay. The rest of the 24 seats will soon be available to purchase for $50 each right here on sixflags.com. All proceeds will benefit the National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives. If I knew collecting roller coasters was a viable option as a kid I would have had significantly less stamps and significantly more friends. Learn from my mistakes, people! So why, exactly, are we retiring Great American Scream Machine? Well, let's just say we have big plans for the space it's currently occupying. And let's also just say these big plans will premiere in 2011. More info to come but, for now, let's all congratulate G.A.S.M on its amazing 21 year run and give it the send off it truly deserves. Some people seem to think they are auctioning off the physical car as a keepsake to take home.
