What's with the little bump hill after the first drop? Are they using that for a quick shot of air-time or something?
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on September 14, 2010, 07:04:10 PM
Yes. It's a double-up. Because they made the first drop so much steeper than the original, they had a long dead spot at the bottom to work with before climbing up into the high banked turn.

(double-up, double-down, turnaround!!!) it would be great if Texas Giant got both a double up AND a double down!

Like Phoenix? :)

Yes, it would be great and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they throw the double-down in. I'm anxiously awaiting to see just how far they take the re-profiling. It's going to have sick overbanked turns so Shoe will be thrilled. ;)

Overbanks, me likey!!!

(I've been making some designs for when I buy NoLimits in the next few weeks, and 5 of the 9 designs have overbanks in some way, shape or form.)

!!!!!! the overbanks are starting to surface on the structure and they look amazing. I definitely have to take a trip down to Texas when this finally opens.

this thing's taking engineering to another level. I think this could run for a solid top 10 next year for wooden coasters.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment

Some wood say it won't steel be wood.

wow, who just HAD to

Steel...wood...stwood...I don't care. This looks SICK!
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on September 15, 2010, 06:43:05 PM
Definitely not a wood coaster anymore. It's no different than Gemini or any mine train with a wooden structure.

But it looks WAY better than Millennium Force and El Toro. :)
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on September 15, 2010, 07:50:49 PM
apparently if you mix El Toro with Millennium Force you get Texas Giant... Two wrongs that make one right never sounded truer.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on September 15, 2010, 07:52:44 PM
I love El Toro.  I find Millennium Force a snooze fest...to be kind.

I certainly hope the new Texas Giant is not a mix of the two.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on September 15, 2010, 07:58:47 PM
I hope its new "effects" are worth the money and actually add something to the ride.

MILLENNIUM FORCE #1.

But this ride does look insane. Can't wait to see what it looks like running.

Do we know anything at yet about the trains they will be using?

I believe Gerstlauer is designing them

Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on September 16, 2010, 08:07:25 PM
Will they be the same kind of trains that they got on the boss, or will it be different?
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on September 16, 2010, 08:13:41 PM
Pretty sure they will be very different unless they end up using old G trains like SoB did. Gerstlauer has produced a new style of train since the G trains we all know came to be.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on September 16, 2010, 08:15:33 PM
You mean the trains that could handle the loop? or the trains after that?
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on September 16, 2010, 08:34:09 PM
Gerstlauer trains never ran on Son of Beast with the loop.  No trains did other than the ones from Premier.

And it wasn't because other trains couldn't handle the loop.  Parks run trains they can buy...
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on September 16, 2010, 08:41:26 PM
If I remember an old convo on a different thread right:
I believe the Premier trains were too heavy for the track so they got lighter G-trains and had to remove the loop in the process. I'm right, right?
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on September 16, 2010, 08:43:42 PM
Close enough! :)

Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on September 16, 2010, 09:25:09 PM
Yes. The G-trains from the Myrtle Beach Hurricane CCI woodie were not intended by their designers to be inverted, even though they probably would have been perfectly safe for doing so. Thus, the only good part of that poor excuse for a wooden coaster was removed.

In Ohio, ride owners/operators must follow ride manufacturer's recommendations in order for a ride to be licensed to operate...

Millennium Force isn't even the #1 tallest coaster at Cedar Point, even.

Though it was, once upon a time.

is this going to be conisdered steel? i think it should be in its own category....wheel :D
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on October 02, 2010, 12:55:44 PM
According to classic definitions, it will indeed be steel.  The time may come those definitions don't make much sense anymore...not unlike, say, ACE Coaster Classic, which term has been redefined several times.

SFNE announced that their bizzaro will not have its flamethrowers next year. they said it was going to another ride... Texas Giant seems likely, doesn't it?

Also, I've heard that bizarro(gadv) hasn't run its flames today and they didn't use them yesterday.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: nitrorox1414 on October 02, 2010, 08:31:51 PM
I like the flames... it really adds to the ride.

I highly doubt it would go to Texes Giant considering that it does have wooden saports

Well, Terminator hasn't burned down yet...
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment

And as long as the sensors don't go bad, the flames shouldn't go within 15 feet of the ride anyway.

Those are some sexy curves, although it's safe to say nobody builds classic wooden coasters anymore, its all steel and its all real

if it was raining hard or if the wind was over 15mph they shut off automatically. Btw the multi colored lights on the s-sheilds are back on!

I saw that, and no it didn't rain for over 4 hours and it wasn't gusty at all when I went.

-EDIT: and that was the first time I rode the ride with the shields on, lol.

It always was, aside from the jack-hammering. ;)

Aside from the jack-hammering?  You mean there was something else?

Wow, who never knew that...
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on October 04, 2010, 06:28:20 PM
It didn't always jack-hammer you to death. ;) It was a great layout under all of the problems and was once even in my top ten woodie list (before it got really bad).
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on October 04, 2010, 09:11:06 PM
I'm sorry, do you also claim Son of Beast was once good?

Wow, who wonders
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on October 05, 2010, 12:36:42 PM
No, Son of Beast has a terrible layout. I found it rather fun still for the loop and extreme speed when it first opened, but it sucked pretty soon after that.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on October 05, 2010, 03:33:47 PM
And then it just plain sucked in general after the loop was removed.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: AV Matt on October 05, 2010, 07:20:09 PM
Yeah, the loop made the boring layout kind of forgivable. It's pointless now. Millennium Force is wayyy better. ;)
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on October 05, 2010, 08:52:47 PM
and now it's just standing there rotting away...

getting back on topic (somewhat), Cedar Point should look into this for Mean Streak; atleast it will shut up all the haters including me.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on October 05, 2010, 09:01:23 PM
And with what would they pay for it?

Capital investment at Cedar Fair is greatly reduced for the next several years on a per park basis, as was indicated during today's conference call...emphasis is on cheap and cheerful attractions, not major investments.  Two parks each year may get a major ride.

I cannot imagine Cedar Fair spending that kind of money to rehab a coaster at Cedar Point, when the same money or less could be used to buy a new attraction.

Windseeker, for example, cost only $5 million.

Post by: B-mac on October 05, 2010, 09:04:08 PM
True, I didn't really recall that they're putting themselves in a bit of a spending diet; but then and again they were just coming out of bankruptcy and getting picked up by a holding company.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on October 05, 2010, 09:07:49 PM
Cedar Fair did NOT go bankrupt...nor was it acquired by Apollo, as the unitholders handily rejected that deal.  A Texas multi-billionaire obtained quite a bit of the units, and he is putting a great deal of pressure on them to produce earnings.

This may be the only reason I'll be getting a Six Flags Season Pass for 2011.
Video over at Screamscape (http://www.screamscape.com/html/six_flags_over_texas.htm)

Have there ever been any other wood to steel conversions like this?
Not sure how I feel about those trains.

Crappy NoLimits model, but looks like they got rid of the helix to save some potential energy to make the magic carpet finale even faster than before. Also of note, they added a tunnel.

They seriously should fire whoever created that clip, that was absolute crap. I have noticed that the new caddy trains have glass on the sides, Do they think someone's gonna get their hand ripped of in one of the underpasses?

Safety standards in 2010/2011 are very different than those when the coaster was first built...
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: B-mac on October 11, 2010, 07:17:10 PM
Or from last year, i guess.
Title: Re: continuing texas giant refurbishment
Post by: GADVwow on October 11, 2010, 07:20:54 PM
Usually a ride can be grandfathered into MOST safety standards as long as substantial rehab does not occur.  When it does, the new standards must normally be met.

There must be a reach issue.  It's no different than the side bars on Toro.  And actually, these being clear may be less annoying.  Well, at least until they are yellowed, scuffed and written on.
