Last night I was reading one of my roller coaster books, particularly, The Roller Coaster Lover's Companion (revised and updated 2002 edition) by Steven J. Urbanowicz. Not only was it sad to read a book written by Steve, but, I came across a section written about the now defunct Batman And Robin: The Chiller. In Chapter 6, The World's Best Steel Roller Coasters, you will find about 20 coasters which Steve has listed as "Five Star Steel Coasters." The second coaster on the list is Batman and Robin: The Chiller. Here is what Steve has to say about The Chiller:
"Not one, but two different track profiles, in a similar basic layout, this linear induction motor launch shuttle catapults riders from 0-70 mph in 4 seconds, flips them through inversions (two on Batman, three on Robin), and soars them up a 200-foot tower, at which time the train rockets backward through the same course. The train was retrofitted with lap-bars only in 2001-2002, making the experience of flying with total freedom and smoothness quite exceptional, and truly making this ride one of the most intense, if not the most intense, coaster on the planet." (Quoted from The Roller Coaster Lover's Companion (revised and updated 2002 edition) by Steven J. Urbanowicz page 49)

Yup. That would be why chiller was in his screen name on this site :(
-
Noticed on screamscape that Chiller is up for sale.
-
We should all pitch in and buy it ;D

who has the biggest yard?
-
I want.
-
How awesome would that be lol. This is awesome news though because it opens the possibility that we may on day get to ride it again. Even if only one side was sold, I'd be fine as long as it's batman :)
-
someone please buy......
-
I'll bid a dollar.
-
I suppose without the Zero-G Rolls. :(
-
Maybe that track is still available. :)
-
i got 4 1/2 acres we can build on! :) shall i buy lots of quickcrete and start making footers? :D
but you gotta wonder, with the reputation that chiller had who is really going to want to buy it?
-
I place my bets on a park in a place that has no concerns with liability. Think Korea, China, etc. I'd be really surprised, but excited, to see it open again in the states. I'm also surprised Six Flags didn't already ship off the trains and lims to the other parks with premier launch coasters just for spare parts.
-
I never rode Chiller. Really never thought much of it until recently I started reading up on it. Very interesting read on the GAoutpost history site. Never appreciated how unique it was until now. I think I always thought the batman side was exactly a mr. freeze. Would anyone dissagree that Batman was the better side? That cobra roll on Robin looks painfull. I also didn`t realize to what degree how unreliable it was. Must have been bitter sweet times when It got torn down. I`m guessing more sad than glad.
-
Once they removed the OTSR, Robin was great. But, the Batman side was still always better. That tophat was far more compact that the Freeze tophat and IMO that overall forces were far greater.
-
^I never got to ride the Batman side. Still upset about that.
-
Fail Shoe...fail!
If the Batman side was open while I was in the park, that's where I was. Definitely the best element on a roller coaster.
-
Did the freeze coaster have problems after the failed opening in 1997? Or are they pretty reliable?
-
They had problems early on as well but at this point are extremely reliable.
-
Could one assume that if chiller were to re-open similar reliability would be possible?
Where would you guys rank chiller against Mr. Freeze, and Fof? Or any other Premier launchers.
-
Freeze pwns all the spaghetti bowls (Fligh of Fear) and every other launched coaster in the world IMO. I never got the Chiller credit though. :(
-
^whaaaaaaat.... how could this be?
Best premier launcher, or best overall? Better than TTD and Storm Runner? I love storm runner.
-
Both chillers rank higher in my ballot than every other launcher I've been on (except maverick).
-
I love me some Stormrunner, but it's not as awesome as either Freeze. Lap bars, inversions, powerful launch, backward free-fall... Winning!
-
It's like this with me for launchers:
1) Maverick
2) Batman Side
3) Robin Side
4) Stormrunner
5) Incredible Hulk
Mind you I have been on 8-9 launchers so far, I don't really like TTD or Ka and I don't exactly recall what rock n' rollercoaster was like.
-
That's a major bummer Matt. I've now been on both Freeze coasters multiple times and while I totally love them and rank them near the top, I still felt Batman chiller was even better. There is something about the sheer mass and power of a Premier launch coaster vs the Intamin cable launch.
-
I guess my only premier launchers are FOF at KI, and 2 Backlots.
-
Well, I guess we can only hope that you and Matt and the rest of us get another chance at Chiller :). In the meantime, get out to SFOT and St.Louis before Six Flags does something crazy again lol
-
Maybe they will move a freeze closer to me. Both places are on my radar but not immediate. The first time I go to Holiday World without the family I plan on doing SFStl. Texas was way off my radar until the new TG rolled in.
-
Shoe, let's do SFStl on the Holliwood Nights Weekend...
-
It's about 2 hrs west... yes/no?
-
Give or take, yup. Just fly into St Louis for Holiwood Nights. That worked out really well.
-
I actually really enjoyed our trip to SFStl.
The park was actually quite nice.
My Holiday Nights trip might be to Texas, unless I hear some good news about the Voyage.
-
Anytime I was at the park and the Chiller was open, only the Robin side was open =/
I am totally down to do SFStls this year. I think it is my favorite Six Flags park that I have been to yet.
-
I really just want to chill out all weekend at Holiday World next year. No side trips. No rush. Just enjoy the campground, my coaster companions and the park for three days. Fun and relaxing. :)
-
I'm hoping to hit 130 this year for my coaster count. Gonna push hard for a Knoebel's trip and quite a few other new parks. Hell I could probably get a co-op job with GCI in the next few years!!! So much to do in the next few years.

what about coaster business =P
-
No serious coaster business. ;)
Just want to have fun with my friends and relax a bit more.
-
I will believe it when I see it.
-
It's already begun.
-
A slow year to you would be the best year ever to me.
-
I don't mean slow. I'm just taking it at an easier pace wherever I go and having a lot more fun that way.
-
That's what I did last year, it was great. No rush to get into the park for anything, just a leisurely pace, and sun burn boy.
-
Maybe Burke buys Chiller to put in at Clementon? That would be an awesome addition!
-
That would rock but being that they had neighbor complaints about the noise back when the Jack Rabbit was still running, I'd say Chiller is out of the question lol
-
Way to be a debbie downer...
-
Fill it with sand! LOL.
-
Fill it with sand! LOL.
I mean it is already dismantled so I feel it would be easy to do that during reconstruction! Hows the power grid down there Wade? Dual Launches?
-
In the news today, Clementon Park's new dual launching roller coaster caused severe brown-outs to most of Camden County because of the amount of strain placed on the grid. Expect these problems to persist throughout the year.
-
Haha no amount of sand will keep a premier launch quiet. I guess it would help a bit so sure, fill it with sand. I'll even help put the sand in the supports lol
-
i keep forgetting to post the pictures i took of the chiller up close near the end of the season. i actually went to the location and even touched a track piece (just couldn't resist. ::) ) if i don't get them up tonight then i will definitely try get them up tomorrow. i do have to say the pieces are getting a bit rusty and the paint is extremely faded. :'(
-
here are those pictures i was talking about. so sad when i saw them :'(

That's sad....:(
-
Where was this? This is sad :( wonder if they will ever sell it to another park. (Nope)
-
It is for sale. No one wants to buy a ride with a bad rep for maintenance. That's why Great Adventure still has Ka. ;-)
-
Thanks for sharing the pics. Amazingly sad sight to see :(. What really sucks is that the removal was nothing but a knee jerk reaction of the previous regime. After seeing the recent Superman redo, I'd have to think this ride could have been saved. New technology and a re-launch of the attraction would have done wonders.

It's was at the same spot seen from Google earth. It's actually a public road that kinda dead ends.
-
It's sad to see it in such a state. I still remember how good it was looking after that paint job before they took it down.
