Boy who fell off park ride ruled at fault

February 27, 2006

WINTER HAVEN -- An Orlando boy who fell from a roller coaster at Cypress Gardens Adventure Park was at fault for standing while riding the Triple Hurricane, a state inspector said Sunday.

Martin Llamas, 13, was in critical condition Sunday at a Tampa hospital with head and other injuries, authorities said.

The Florida Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection called the accident "patron error," and the Polk County Sheriff's Office is treating it as a "tragic accident," sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.

The roller coaster closed after the accident about 6 p.m. Saturday but reopened Sunday morning, Cypress Gardens spokeswoman Lynn Wright said.

Susan Jacobson and Amy C. Rippel of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.

Peer pressure and stupidity give the industry a bad name.  Somehow it will be the parks fault for not duct taping the kid in. If you start to see OTSR on a coaster you'll know why

Hard, isn't it?  I remember debating with my dad about how it wasn't SFMM's fault when that woman got hit by Scream! since she wasn't supposed to be in there to begin with.  I gave up after he said that the train should have a brake on it that a rider can activate in case of emergency.
