Shapiro shaking things up at Six Flags (JAN 3; 3:48 PM) Mark Shiparo is beginning to shake up Six Flags less than a month after taking over as president and chief executive. The ESPN programmer announced recently the hiring of another ESPN executive and a promotion for the top boss at the now-shuttered AstroWorld.

Mark Quenzel, who helped create ESPN's popular X-Games brand, will work with Chuck Hendrix, a 13-year veteran of Six Flags and former AstroWorld boss, to head the company's new Parks Strategy and Management division.

The unit will oversee all park operations, in-park revenue, ticket sales and safety for the company's 30 parks.

Hiring friends to office...a little unqualified prehaps?  Can anyone say George Bush is now running Six Flags?

ESPN and Six Flags ... there is a connection as they are both entertainment mega-properties and thus require a sales and entertainment background.

Arabian Horse association and F.E.M.A. ... not so much of a connection there.

If I had successful friends that I felt could do the job right, I'd hire them too. Think about it, would you rather work with someone you've had success with in the past, or risk it with a newcomer? In addition, they are putting 13-year veteran Chuck Hendrix on the team as well. I really don't see a problem with this.

A lot of people have been very quick to jump up against Snyder/Shapiro. We still haven't seen ANYTHING to judge them by yet!

Thats very true Stew

Even at my job, the first thing we do is look to our employees for somebody they might know that fits the job description  They tend to be more loyal and have fewer problems (provided you have faith in the employee that is giving you the info)

agreed it sounds like a good staff.. but im not too crazy about the whole we need to look towards the family rides.  I think GADV has done a hell of a job with family rides over the years.  I think we need to look in the way of retheming re vamping and adding new Thrill RIDES.. not nesicarily coasters.

The family department is better than it has been in years.  More like ever,.

Funny, He's still on http://www.sixflags.com/. Also, have you seen anything official saying he's gone? I've only seen comments that Snyder doesn't like him and is considering getting rid of him. And news articles referencing those comments. I know he's on his way out, but is this the type of decision that will change my parkgoing experience? No.

Mr. Six is the best. What are they going to do with the commercials. People were so attracted to the park by the old dancing guy. That's what so many people called him, The Old Dancing Six Flags Guy. He was definitely the man.

Sure, he's still on six flags, and sure it won't stop me from going to the park at all.  I just think its completely insane to get rid of the best ad campaign the park has ever had to replace it for what Snyder calls "Clean, safe fun".  That is what he is wanting to replace Mr. Six with, and it seems he always gets is way.  It's not going to make me think of the park differently, but it sure as hell will make me look at him differently.

I also wouldn't be suprised if things get a little out of control in the advertisment department.  I am expecting to see ads pop up for everything throughout the park.  This is one of him plans I believe to "gain more revenue".  I don't want to walk around the park seeing an advertisment for deoderant while standing in like for ET.

the new guy said hes not afraid to fail.. and getting rid of mr six he will learn, is considered a failure.  I think he will realize that mr six will be sorely missed.

Indeed, unless he has some secret marketing strategy to outdo Mr. Six    Which I highly doubt at this rate...
