And now, according to the L A Times, Knott's officials have confirmed Demon Drop IS going to Knott's. Doesn't sound like they are thrilled about it at the Times, either:
Knott’s Berry Farm to add 1980s-era thrill ride in 2010
Demon Drop at Cedar Point, coming to Knott'sd Berry Farm in 2010
Knott’s Berry Farm’s new attraction for 2010 is an aging hand-me-down thrill ride that’s older than many of the Buena Park theme park’s patrons.
The Demon Drop attraction will be relocated from sister park Cedar Point in Ohio, where the ride debuted in 1983 — when Ronald Reagan was president, Michael Jackson introduced the moonwalk and leg warmers were in fashion.
Knott’s officials confirmed that the installation of the drop tower ride will begin in January with a grand opening scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend 2010. Knott’s will keep the Demon Drop name, color scheme and theme....

This just boggles the mind. Just unreal...
-
I think the point is starting to clear an area that will need to be very cleared a year from now. Disaster Transport anyone?? Spiral Tower Perhaps?
-
^Or just another state-of-the-art flat ride that the world has never seen before.
-
Honestly, I view this as nothing more than a move by a company that is heading towards bankruptcy. But that's just me.
And for the record, I hope Disaster Transport stays!

I could see that... I do think the next big ride there is a wooden coaster. Hoping GG but probably a GCI. After their past year of fixing up Boulder Dash, and building Prowler maybe GCI isn't such a bad thing.
-
And now the Sandusky Register has the story:
http://www.sanduskyregister.com/articles/2009/10/21/front/doc4ade3bf09e32e219435431.txt (http://www.sanduskyregister.com/articles/2009/10/21/front/doc4ade3bf09e32e219435431.txt)
As they get this ride at Knott's, I hope its fans see the point...
-
why would they recycle this ride and not the stuntmans freefall? they were both from around the same time period, werent they?
-
Yes, but CP took better care of it and it is in a lot better shape.
-
Hence, the reason why it's not getting scrapped.
-
They're making room for Geauga Lake's Big Dipper.
-
Matt is sleep posting again. I'll let him keep dreaming for a while. :)

This big dipper?
With it going over the old entrance of the park before color photos?
-
^ Yes. Matt and a few others would love to see that coaster entrance at Cedar Point.
-
I thought big dipper was firewood now.
-
No. It is awaiting its new home. ;)
-
I am kind of disappointed in this news. At least I got to ride Demon Drop this past summer when I went to Cedar Point.
-
More reason to go out west instead of Cedar Point.
-
I hope it stays through 2013! DCA should be finished by then and it's when I'd like to make a trip to the west.
Xcelerator and Ghostrider and Demon Drop. Oh my!
-
Monte and Silver Bullet too!
Oh wait.... DISNEYLAND pwns 'em all!
-
^^ whats DCA??
-
DCA is Disney's California Adventure. The park is getting a major overhaul...http://www.gadvoutpost.com/home.php/topic,1808.0.html (http://www.gadvoutpost.com/home.php/topic,1808.0.html)
-
Haven't heard of any major ride addition rumors yet. Any thoughts on what way they are going with that?
-
Since I did sway this off topic, I'll post the details in the DCA thread. :D
-
cool beans
-
Little Mermaid Darkride!
-
anybody ever do the penny trick on demon drop?? can't do that on modern drop rides. Loves me some penny trick.
-
No. Lose articles such as a penny could be very dangerous. Deliberately letting go of such an item is not something I do.
-
You catch the penny while hovering. It's all part of the trick. Penny's fall from rides all the time. Filming rides... now thats dangerous. I saw a guy get kicked out of CW today filming behemoth. He was unpleased. His GF less pleased.
-
Uh, loose articles, including pennies, are NOT permitted on Demon Drop. If security or a ride op catches you, you can and will be ejected from the park, if you are lucky. If you are not lucky, you can be arrested. In Ohio, this is a misdemeanor and can subject you to a fine and/or imprisonment.
It is a VERY dangerous practice and Cedar Fair has NO tolerance for it.
Trick indeed.
Sigh.
-
Kids.
-
I always wanted to work at Stuntman's free fall for that very reason, to collect all the loose change at the end of the night.
-
In his defense guys, tons of these thrill ride tv shows make it a point of using a penny or ball on rides like this to show the physics and not once do they mention that this isn't allowed.
But no, it isn't a good idea.
-
Youre right, a penny moving at that speed can kill. it was even worse when they did the same with a tennis ball on superman in magic mountain (on an older show).
-

If you also notice they close the area down for safety when they do things like that.
-
i can understand why they would do that. but how would it move laterally? If you want to hear something really scary my two friends were at gadv once and one went on medusa while the other stood under the cobra. then when the train came around my friend threw the tennis ball off the train while the one off the ride tried to catch it. Mind you i wasnt there and didnt have a part in this.
-
STUPID!
It may sound cool to try this, but PLEASE think of the consequences if something goes wrong. People can be seriously hurt. Lose articles can seriously injure or even kill. Think it through. There are enough dangers out there out of the control of the rider.
-
^^I caught hats out of the air on Nitro. I've been hit with pocket change on Apollo's chariot, And I almost got hit with a cell phone waiting in line for El toro.
I've had my share of unintentional fun.
-

Man have you been hit with a few coins that have fallen from rides, or something. That was way over the top. I had to check to see if I wrote penny/demon drop OR.. shotput/kingda ka
OK I admit after putting a bit of thought into it the penny trick could result in an accident. Doing it intentionally is unnecessary and wrong. If anything bad were to happen I would feel terrible.
That being said I really don't believe it's dangerous to anyone outside of the pod. That is unless you throw the penny out the side. The coin literally drops with you and could never drop from a high height. Again unless you throw it.
If it were truly dangerous than all rides were coins commonly fall should be banned. Intamin Starship for example are especially bad. Looping Coasters, Top spins, ban them all.
Life is all about calculated risk and driving to cedar point is 10 trillion times more likely to kill you than demon drop is. Getting out of bed isn't 100% safe.
Again I'd like to say I agree doing this "trick" is unnecessary and "potentially" dangerous. I've actually never done it but I've been in a pod with a stranger who has.
Ps. just be glad you yanks don't have loonies and twonies! lol
-
Man have you been hit with a few coins that have fallen from rides, or something. That was way over the top.
thats not very nice.
but anyway, i cant imagine being hit with a penny or even a cell phone going 80-100mph. riding nitro in the rain is painful enough!
-
^I've been hit by speeding pocket change. small change, like dimes and pennies, doesn't hurt me for some strange reason.
When you get hit by quarters and half dollars then the pain gets pretty bad, I still have scars from when I got hit with change from three years ago.
No, none of these were my stunts.
-
^^ I didn't mean it like the coins messed you up... I meant it like being hit by coins made you sensitive to this topic. My appoligies
-
^ Don't get worried about it. Just try to make sure a flame war doesn't start. Sometimes people read boards the wrong way, partially cause you can't judge someone's emotions or way of speech unless they have caps lock on.
LIKE THIS!
(not yelling at you, just proving a point.)
-
A coworker believes it will become a pay attraction. I'm not sure about that, but would anybody pay to ride it?
I think I would :D
-
only, if it's less than $1.
-
most likely it will be at least $5. erUPtion is $8 and that just sucked.
-
Demon Drop has always been a pay attraction. 1 coin, any coin you wish. ahahaahahah J/K!
-
I would pay $5-$10 to ride it every time I visit. It's such a thrilling ride. There aren't many rides that do that for me anymore.
-
I say losing a penny is a fair charge.
-
If it was 5 bucks, hand the guy $4.99
When the attendant says your a penny short.
You reply "don't worry you'll get it after the rides over."
-
i was thinking, i can't remember a demon drop.. but that was literally the first ride i ever went on at CP this summer. :D as for change.. they check hands at the drop tower in KD. it's a 72mph drop, i went on it a lot and one time, the stranger next to me was going to try the "penny trick" except it never flipped over onto his pants like he was told.. it fell seconds after we stopped at the bottom, and the penny hit the ground then flew 20 ft away into the bushes. I was very concerned he was going to throw it, but he was legit when i asked him before they checked our hands. :)
-
Demon drop is dropped at gravity I believe. New drop towers are not. They are thrusted more so. Which gives you a huge headstart on the coin. Don't do it (the penny trick)especially on taller drop towers. It doesn't work and that penny has a long way to fall. Im not sure about this gravity as opposed to thrust thing. Anybody know what the difference is for sure.
-
the drop tower at KD is strictly gravity as well as Demon drop (not the same thing, very different rides), the coin flew off his pant leg due to the wind during the drop or his leg moving i suspect.. the dull 'new style' drop tower at DP is a sling shot, that thrusts down and bounce up and down a few times before finally coming down.
-
Who's got the best drop tower?
-
Any of the 300 footer drop towers...
-
I think KD would have the best, its the tallest and fastest drop tower by gravity in North America.
-
The smaller tower at Morey's scares me. The big ones at Kings Island & Dominion do not.
-
The original Big Shot type shot/drop rides are far more intense than recent drop rides. Same story for first generation INTAMINS, like Stuntman's and Demon Drop.
-
i just love that click noise and huge gush of wind immediately following it as i become weightless right when the thing falls. :D I remember liking that about demon drop too.
-
The smaller tower at Morey's scares me. The big ones at Kings Island & Dominion do not.
Thats the tallest drop tower on the east coast! (i think, at least it was, maybe its the tallest one in nj :D)
-
there's only two in NJ. the other is in seaside.
-
Well the short towers at Beech Bend and Lake Winnie are scarier than any of the Intamin mega towers. They don't stop dropping when you expect them to. They keep going for like another 20+ feet and then have a much more abrupt stop than the Intamin towers. They fake me out every time. I just can't get used to them.
-
IMHO :P
-
demon drop is king for me. So messed up when you slide on yourt back.
-
Yeah, the sliding on your back ending just makes them superior to anything that's come since.
-
Scream Scape has parts of DD sighted at Dorny.

...“Initial plans to install the ride at Knott’s Berry Farm have recently changed,” Knott’s spokeswoman Jennifer Blazey said in a written statement. “The change is a result of a review of the site geography, aesthetic park design, land use, and in the ride’s uniqueness in the northeast United States.”...

-
Sure... Nobody will remember Free Fall being at Gadv. What a dumb idea for either park!
-
No, it's a great idea! It's a great ride!
-
and now it's somewhat nearby! but, where will it go in dorney?
-
That's all relative Matt. While we will obviously be happy with this decision, the GP will be saying that is just like that ride that gadv got back in the early 80's. I just don't see how this makes any financial sense. But yes, I'll be there riding it to lol.
-
It ought to go to michigan adventures
-

You give the GP way too much credit.
I think Dorney visitors are going to ride this and like it. Maybe 25% of them will realize and/or care that there used to be one at SFGAdv. Old or not, most people will think it's new. Only enthusiasts will make a deal of the "business sense" angle.
-
I guess we'll all have to wait and see but then again, why did all the other parks remove them? Besides the obvious high maint costs, gadv had pathetic ridership to justify keeping it around so I just don't see how this move makes sense for cedar fair. With that said, I wonder how the neighbors are going to like this noisy ride?
-
...Dorney Park officials confirmed that the relocated Demon Drop would open during summer 2010, not by opening day (May 1) but probably by the Fourth of July. ...
...Dorney Park will retain the Demon Drop name and logo, but may change the color scheme, according to park officials. The ride will be located in the northeast corner of the park near Thunder Creek Speedway go-carts. The existing Krazy Kars ride may have to be removed to make room for Demon Drop, officials said....

I for one am excitted. DD was like CP's 12th best ride. At Dorney it will be 4 or 5. More reason to go to dorney.
-
It makes no sense at all why it would go to DP.
-
awesome news
-
LOL at the range of responses. For me, DD will be tied with Talon as my favorite ride at Dorney. And that's cool that they are retaining the name, but it sure would fit in better near Possessed with that theme. Hopefully the Krazy Kars get axed and Dorney follows up with a decent set of bumper cars.
Was the free fall ridership really that bad in its final years? I'm surprised to hear that considering there was little much else for adults to do there than ride coaster after coaster.
-
It was often worse than Scream Machine is now. Which isn't saying much. :(
-
...which is interesting given that Kings Island's Vortex often still draws very long lines...
-
Vortex is one of the smoothest Arrows I have ever been on. In my opinion, it is also a much better ride.
-
Was the free fall ridership really that bad in its final years?
Yeah, They would close it around 2pm because they would get so little riders during the day. And that was when it was open.
-
I changed the title since it has been confirmed it is going to Dorney.
-
...which is interesting given that Kings Island's Vortex often still draws very long lines...
Kings Island doesn't have much other looping options though.
-
KI has a really unique line-up of coasters when you think of it. They don't have a true inverted coaster. They have 4 wood but no CCI, GCI, or GG. They didn't have a B&M until 2009. No Intamin. Yet they have 13 or 14 coasters.
Vekoma Flyer, FOF, BLSC, Invertigo, Suspended... all fairly uncommon models.
Sorry for going of topic.
DEMON DROP RULES! aha
-
sweet! i renewed my platnium pass as DP so I can go back there as it's closer.. now i can hit up Demon Drop! Lol. CF doesn't like CA.. They give everything to CP and east. :D
-
well, that park might close anyway, so what's the point. I'm glad I can ride a stuntman's(clone) for the first time in over three years.
-
Knott's might close? Are you smoking something? :)
Knott's did knott want Demon Drop.
And if you meant California's Great America...that's CGA, not CA (the state..)
-
I don't want to see the Krazy Cars go. I happen to think that they're a lot of fun. Not necessarily bumping head on, but going in circles was fun and backing into the walls gave a nice pop off the ground.
-
Have you ridden cars like that elsewhere? They make Dorney's seem awful. Holiday World's bumper cars are better!
-
I used to like bumper cars. Too many kids allowed to ride. Every park should have a 3 hr (21 and up)ert on bumper cars.
-
Yeah, kids (or anyone who doesn't know how to BUMP) can really ruin a good time on Bumper Cars, but they can also make for an extra fun time if you get to target them and make them sorry they got in your way. :)
Even at Knoebels, you occasionally get a really bad ride due to too many clueless drivers. I used to hate the rides that force you to drive in one direction, but it helps cut down on people getting in your way when you know what you're doing and trying to go around building up speed and slamming into people.
-
Yeah too many cars is an issue too. Bumper Cars at Canadas wonderland are nicknamed (401 in rush hour) cuz you literally never move. There is double the amount of cars there should be and only kids ride them. If you go on after 9 it's decent. But after nine is reserved for the Vortex, Behemoth happy ending.
To tie in the topic, Wonderland was rumoured to be in the running for DD after Knotts fell though. I'm sure it would have done reasonably well. All rides do well here due to no competition.
IMO the real reason DD was removed is to start clearing room for CP's next coaster. Does anyone else think the front of the park would be a horrible place to put a GCI? I'm not sure about the space situation but frontier (trail/land) would have been my choice. I understand the desire to have a major attaction placed by wicked twister and all that but a GCI wood doesn't make sense to me. Maybe the next steel coaster they put in. However I'm guessinf GCI's can have small footprints, and thats a big part of the attraction.
I'm rambling. Happy Holiday one and all.
-
You only need an acre (less actually) for a stunning Gravity Group woodie...Boardwalk Bullet. ;)
Between Disaster Transport and the Space Spiral architecture, they kind of have a contemporary look going in that corner of the park. With that in mind, a woodie doesn't sound the most logical for that location.
Hopefully they will figure something out that fits in where ever they put it and not require removal of more rides and what charm is left.
-
I will make your kids cry on bumper cars!
The "Onion" reported Knott's maintenance crew having a kegger to celebrate the non arrival of Demon Drop. "Good luck Dorney ", Bob Smith said over the weekend.
