Title: Holiwood Nights
Post by: dkny6363 on November 25, 2009, 11:42:21 PM
I need info on holiwood nights.

-What club should I join?
-What is the turn-out like?
-How die hard is it?
-Is it as awesome as it sounds?
-Are hotels reasonable in the area?

Join whichever club you want to join that's listed on their page.

The last few years have been pretty light, with about 400-500 people. I heard the first year the line for Voyage got to well over 30-40 minutes. Luckily on all my visits I've never waited for more than 10 minutes during ERT.

Ummm... die hard? I don't know how to answer that.

It is awesome if you like power riding wooden coasters than can beat you up :)

Hotels are reasonable. I always stay at Santa's Lodge. Family Suite is usually $199 for the 2 nights and holds about 5-6 people deopending on if youre OK with sleeping with someone.

The reason I ask about "die hard" is this. My family really likes coasters. They are by no means enthusiests. I'm not sure holiwood nights is for them. All three of them prefer steel to wood, although they all like wood. Especially El Toro. Basically what i'm asking is will someone GP'ish be able to take this event or would it be too much?

PS thanks for the tips so far.
Another question for you. Is the ERT all 3 at once, or is it one at a time?

Post by: Robert T Ackerman on November 26, 2009, 11:56:46 PM
ERT is all 3 at once, both nights. If they prefer steel to wood, and like El Toro, then doing this event might not be the best thing for them. The coasters ride like wooden coasters are supposed to, unlike Toro.

Don't get me wrong they like wood. I just don't see them riding each one 10 times each night. Plus I know they'll love the waterpark. I'm more worried about how they'll fit in with the crowd.

I wouldn't worry about that. It's a public amusement park. There will be lots of different types of people there, no one judging... and if there are people there that are judging, they aren't worth your time. From my experience, it's always been very laid back and everyone is there for the same reason: To have fun.

K cool. Thanks for the tips again. I've never myself been to an event like this. I was going to make PPP in 2010 my first but when I heard about this one I said to myself I can't let this one pass by for another year.

With the new trains it might not beat you as much . Hopefully,  all three of us make it this year .This being my first event, I  Iook forward to later night rides! Plus I've never stepped foot in their waterpark the last two times I've been.

I'm going to try making this my main event I do for 2010. Only tough part will be that I'm in Vegas for a week right before it which is a lot of being away from the family. Bubba, Rob, you driving or flying?

Depending on time off of work, flying. If I can get Thursday-Monday off I'll drive, but flying on NWA is usually $180 RT.

If I bring 3 ppl+ myself. How many of us need to belong to a club?
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: AV Matt on December 01, 2009, 01:02:46 AM
I think a club member can bring as many guests as he/she wants to bring.  See www.holidayworld.com/clubs (http://www.holidayworld.com/clubs) for lots of info.

All the years I've gone, I've never gone to the morning water park ERT, but with the new water coaster and knowing how much Bubba wants to ride it, I think I will get up early this time and go. Sometimes it has been chilly in the morning, but the water is heated, so as long as you stay in the water it probably won't be bad, especially considering the event is a little later in the season this time around.

If you take the NWA flight from Philly to Detroit to Louisville, sit on the right side of the plane in the "Cedar Point seats", right Rob? ;)

It might be the left side, you'll have to ask Ian, if he'll ever post here again.

Matt Shoe, if I end up driving I'm hitching a ride with some of my friends that work at the park, and it'll already be full. If not, you can fly with us and what not!

It's not affiliated with the park (no hotel nor campground is). Yes, it's within walking distance, as is the Lake Rudolf campground.

Uh, if you say so.  Phil Koch and his sister, Kristi George, of the Koch family, run the Lake Rudolph Campground.

It is the OFFICIAL campground of Holiday World and Splashing Safari.

Kings Island's calendar has not yet been announced.  Given Cedar Fair's financial condition, there can be no assumption what that calendar will provide until it is released.

'Buzz is about your cheapest option. Just don't expect any genuine gratitude from Jeff Putz (the guy behind the club).

I'm no longer a card-carrying member of any official club. It's just not worth it to me after 20 years with ACE and the proliferation of the Roller Coaster Internet. The news letters and magazines aren't worth the money to me anymore. I know enough people, I can always find a sponsor to get into an event now and I'm happy to pay extra for being a guest if I choose to go to a special event.

You probably noticed my post pointing out KI's calendar is now out.  Open til 8 the Thursday before, til 10 the Sunday after:

http://mobile.visitkingsisland.com/public/visit/schedule/ (http://mobile.visitkingsisland.com/public/visit/schedule/)

Keep checking, though.  They sometimes change the calendar...and the park itself may or may not change ownership before then, which could result in further changes.

^ Yea I noticed the scheduale. Thanks for the heads up. I was pretty pumped to find out they are open until 8 the thursday before holiwood nights. I may still take the sunday after but I'm guessing crowds will be much greater.

Off topic a little but do you need membership for PPP? I'm guessing you don't but I want to make sure Coasterbuzz is cool for that too so I don't have to end up joining two.

I've decided that i'm hitting up KI either the thursday before Holiwood Nights, or the Sunday after. I have also decided that my first beast ride ever I will be saving until darkness. After many suggestions to do so.

My questions are..
#1 Do you all agree that your first beast ride should be at night? Keep in mind I'm a HUGE night ride person.
#2 Thursday they close at 8 and  sunday at 10. Will it be dark enough from 7-8 in early june to get dark rides on thursday? As well as will it be dead enough to get more than 1 or 2 rides?
#3 I've been hearing over and over the best spot to sit on the beast is front seat. I'm a huge back seat guy. Whats better?

Thanks for the help.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: GADVwow on January 11, 2010, 08:50:50 PM
Oh, boy...a question I am well qualified to answer.

First of all, Beast is a night ride.  It gets very long lines, particularly once it gets dark.  No, it will NOT be dark enough at 8 in June...it doesn't get really dark until 9 or so...

And it certainly will not be dead on a weekend in June.  Sorry, but I suspect you'd rather hear the truth than a tale.

As for where?  I love the back (and once rode it with Steve Urbanowicz 25+ times in the very back seat).  I also love the front.  If you have never ridden the Beast, and do wait til after dark, I'd recommend the back.  The whole point of the front is the smoothness and to see where you are going.  Neither is all that important after dark.

GADVwow...old enough to now be found in the next to last seat, thank you very much!
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: dkny6363 on January 11, 2010, 10:40:34 PM
^ Even though it's school months it will be busy... the Thursday as well? What kind of waits are we talking here? Granted nobody knows from one day to the next for sure. Just approximates.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: GADVwow on January 12, 2010, 07:07:56 AM
I didn't say it would be busy Thursday night...and that is NOT a school night.  Ohio is not New Jersey.  I did say it would not be dark enough to call it a dark ride on Thursday night at 8.  Not even close.

The biggest factor on waits is weather.  If it is not raining cats and dogs, Thursday near close should be a 20-30 minute wait, but could be less.  Just an hour or two earlier will be a near walk on, if it is a typical day.

If it is raining, even a little, it's Cedar Fair.  They will probably close the coaster...or go down to one train operation!

Sunday will be less busy during the day, but not near closing at the Beast.  Beast ALWAYS gets a long line near closing time as everyone local who wants to ride it wants to ride it after dark.  The ride also closes during the fireworks, which Kings Island, at least in past years, has every night that the park closes at 10.  It reopens thereafter, but closes with the park.  If you are in line, they will let you ride, but maybe not in the seat of your choice if you are in the very last trains.

How long will the wait be?  Remember, a LOT of the people who go to Holiwood nights are locals.  Many of them will go to Kings Island after HN.  And guess what they will be doing?  Do I need to tell you?
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: PcMan on January 12, 2010, 11:22:38 AM

I love the Beast  I know it would be 100% better/faster/rougher without the trim brakes but a fun ride.

Why limit yourself to one ride  when I was there I rode the front a few times the back a few times the middle both day and night
yes the late day/night rides are better/faster but why wait just get there early.

Also Just join ACE as a member you get in Kings island for around $25 or so and you get to be the first riders of the day on the beast plus ACE gets you other park benefits and Local events at discounts and many events in the NJ/PA/VA  region.
In 2009 NJ ACE reps. had many events including EL Toro with Food Fun and ERT
ACE just had one this past Saturday.

I wouldn't send my $ to Jeff Putz at Coasterbuz  but that's my opinion

Beast was good in the front, definitely was better back in the old days though.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: AV Matt on January 12, 2010, 01:07:08 PM
Beast is still awesome in total darkness, front or back.

I wouldn't wait for your first ride to be at night. I would get there early and make sure you get at least one ride in as soon as you can in case something happens later keeping you from getting your first ride. I've had  bad luck with break-downs on The Beast. Go for a front seat ride in the daytime and a backseat ride at night at a minimum.

Good advice all.

How is thursday in early june not a school night? do you guys have a drastically different school schedule than we do that I am not aware of? School goes until late June around here.

Is joining ACE similar to CoasterBuzz? How much $$
I'm guessing its different in alot of ways. Keep in mind I'm only joining a group to get in HN.

This Beast thing has me flustered. I want to go thurs but there won't be dark rides. I don't want to go sunday cuz KI is anticlimatic to HN, and to my no enthusiast family the beast is going to suck to them after 100 rides on the voyage. I'll have to defend it for a 7 hr car ride.

In related discussion has anyone read the beast review on coaster philosophy? It's long but interesting. Especially from someone who's never ridden it.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: GADVwow on January 12, 2010, 06:30:03 PM
Ohio schools are usually out by Memorial Day.  They start LONG before Labor Day, though.  See KI's calendar!

There is no longer, to my knowledge, an ACE discount to Kings Island.  Hasn't been the last year or so.

ACE no longer has a special walkback to Beast, either...though its members are free to join Platinum and Gold Pass riders to early ride time on days when the park offers it, to Diamondback and Beast.  That was last year.  This year?  No one is even sure who will own the park, much less what the privileges will be.

And on a Thursday in June when the park closes at 8, there will be no night rides on Beast.  Of that, I am certain.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights

Just take your last ride of the "day" with your eyes closed and you'll get the idea. ;)

I love the Beast all day, but probably because I know what it's like at night and can appreciate it more than a lot of nay-sayers. Ask Bubba. He's a believer now.

I'm really hoping to make it this year and it would rock even more to re-visit the Beast. I wasn't overly impressed with my day ride mid-train so I need to be made a believer as well.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: dkny6363 on January 12, 2010, 09:16:59 PM
I have a bit of a night ride trick. It works great especially around 8:30. Wear dark sunglasses. It makes dusk rides dark, and dark rides frightening. The first time I ever forgot to take off my sun glasses was my first ever night ride on twister. It was like a runaway freight train. It was my number 1 until the next year when I warmed up alot more to the phoenix, and then two days later on el toro.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: AV Matt on January 13, 2010, 12:57:52 PM
One night ride made Bubba a believer. :)

If you don't get a dark ride, a dense fog evening ride is the next best thing!

And if you don't like "roughness", sit between the wheels in a middle seat in any car of the train, but go for the back if you really want to feel the POWER of the Beast. :)

Dark rides look like they're out for me. The piss-off of the whole thing is the thursday before HN it closes at 8, and just the following weeks thurday it close at 10. Just my luck.
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: WadeJ on January 13, 2010, 02:00:47 PM
Nice job hitting the censor lol

The thing is, it's the changes in the air and many other factors that make late night rides even better. My best rides ever on Toro were at midnight. So I'm not sure just having it being dark by 8:30 would make that big of a difference. It seems like the repeated rides that keep the wheels hot at these events along with the weather changes after being dark for a while are what do it (like the dew that starts forming, etc).
Title: Re: Holiwood Nights
Post by: AV Matt on January 13, 2010, 05:54:35 PM
The way the Beast is blocked and how long the ride is, there really isn't much improvement to be made on dispatching trains faster for enthusiasts so you don't get that benefit from ERT of keeping the grease extra warm. The later the better and I agree about the cool night air being a factor in the overall sensory experience, but just being surrounded in darkness out in the woods makes a huge difference on this ride.

Just get the best ride you can while you can and look forward to future visits in total darkness. Unfortunately it's hard to get more than one true night ride in the same day as line tends to get busy like Wow mentioned.

A couple of my friends live close to the park and they will run to the park on a rainy evening just to get a good night ride whenever they can. Lucky punks.

My bad about the sensor. It's a sensative one apparently.

I'm only a half hour from CW and we often leave at 8:30 just to do the vortex, behemoth night ride sesh.

I think doing what you said matt is what I am going to have to do. It's sucks though, I always like to ride a great ride the first time the RIGTH way. but it's not like i'm going to drive 10-11 hours to HW and not stop at KI which is almost literally on the way. Maybe I will do the sunday thing, but then its like you said it could break down mid-day and then what? Thanks for all the imput. I'm just gonna play it by ear. I just found out today I have 2 exam scheduales to deal with now too.

Look on the bright side. GL willo move to a more desirable park to visit. You will one day get that credit. One day. ;)

Let's hope it survives. So wish Knoebels would pick it up. An Anton shuttle looper would be perfect for them. Perhaps it will go back to Great America for nostalgia.

So, anyone else thinking Kings Island the Sunday after HoliWood Nights? I could use some good suspended coasterage now that my Wolf is gone and of course THE BEAST in total darkness. I'm thinking something like fly into Louisville Friday morning and back out Monday. Maybe we can fit Indiana Beach in too. ;)

Question... Why is the itinarary so awesome for Holiwood Nights, and so kife for fall afair?

Because the Fall Affair is a small CoasterBuzz event and does not bring in enough revenue for the park to go "all out".
