Title: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: Ogolo on December 05, 2010, 04:57:24 PM
This helps me get thru the winter!

Since I had much fun at the 2010 St. Louis / Holliwood Nights trip..time to get some 2011 ideas going.

-2011 Texas Giant
-2011 Holliwood Horror Nights / Cheetah Hunt
-Initimator 2011 Redo...wasn't a fan but would try it again just for Grizzly!
-2011 Holiwood Nights (You still have that Timberliner ticket somewhere right?)
-Knight Valley, Shenzhen, China - Ok you can I can dream

No Wisconsin...

My ideal trips for the upcoming season are Holliwood Nights, a Texas Giant Trip (Boardwalk Bullet too?), Cedar Point/Waldameer, Intimidator Re-visit, Coastin' by the Ocean.

Completely forgot about kemah boardwalk... the last time I went there was back in '07 before the bullet even had its track on. I want to get that credit, too.

I'm sure I'll be at WDW at least a few times lol

Aside from that, I'll likely be able to hit SFOT and Cedar Point via business trips and I'd like to get to Holiwood Nights again as the "big" trip.

I'm planning a VERY early Dollywood trip since I doubt I'll get there by the end of this year, so maybe their opening weekend.

Plan to do KD and maybe BGW one weekend since I really need the 305 credit, but I'm waiting till it's open before I go as I've got everything else.

Will hit up SFoG a little later to give the new credit time to open.

'Definite' plans are:
Texas trip for Giant and credits, possibly/probably memorial day weekend.
Coastermania (skipping HWN this year for that) and hopefully Kings Island.
CBuzz's Fall Affair and maybe Beech Bend
July 4 weekend trip north
Labor Day weekend trip north

Hope to get tons of credits on those last two.

I just noticed that the 2011 Holiwood Nights Flyer is up thier website. No real changes from last year. No mention of claws. The price went up a buck.

In related news PPP is going to be on thanksgiving again for me.

Who's possibly going to ocboulderfest this year? Now that i've picked it in the draft I have to finally ride it.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips

I'll go if you'll be there. :)

So I guess that means no PPP for you this year?

Regarding HoliWood Nights, every year is a different "movie theme".

PPP was on thanksgiving this year too.. I just have to miss hangover day.

I'll probably hit up one, or two of these three events. Likely not all of them.

Random Question... has anyone ever been to Famous Daves at CP's Marina? If the food awesome, or just overpriced and cedarpointishy?

The food is very good, but it is expensive.

If you like barbecue, it's your typical Famous Dave's chain fare. (Not a fan of any barbecue myself.)
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: B-mac on December 13, 2010, 07:34:58 PM
I like barbecue as long as the food isn't rough. Anything that has been barbecued has to be chewy for me or it will ruin my entire meal, I am an extremely picky eater.

^^ WHAT!?!?!!?!!!???!!!!?

Don't like bbq?! speechless!

You don't like steak, Ribs, Pulled Pork, Brisket, Wings?

Famous Daves is a chain? Never heard of that before.

I love Steak, hot wings and fried chicken. Not the other stuff.

Yes Famous Dave's is a nationwide chain down here, neighbor.

Menu looks like a montana's. Not too pricy considering it's walking distance from CP. Not really anything on the menu over $20. I however am used to Can. restraunt prices which are usually about 20% higher. If I had to chose between a pulled pork sandwich from famous daves for $9.99, and a cold burger and fries from CP midway for $8.99... I'll take Daves next time. Usually my fam and I bust into Sandusky for Ruby Tuesdays, Chili's, or the all might Olive Garden. Next time deffinatly tryin daves.

So next time you guys come up to Canadas Wonderland my famous bbqed Canadian Bacon won't excite? lol

LOL.  Sorry, won't get me excited. I'm sure Bubba will love it though.

Yeah, I'd rather go to Dave's than eat at CP as well. But Chili's... now I LOVE Chili's!

Post by: dkny6363 on December 13, 2010, 09:02:24 PM
We just started getting chili's here.

About ocboulderfest... Is Lake Compounce a full day kind of park, or could you juggle it with SFNE? I'm proably looking at doing SFNE on the Sunday if I go, but I thought I'd ask anyways.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: AV Matt on December 13, 2010, 09:15:17 PM
If you like to do flats, it's an all-day park (and/or the water rides and water park). The water rides are great and the 25-minute sky ride trip up and back down the mountain is fantastic, but the sky ride closes at the threat of unfavorable weather and is closed later in the fall, but may be open still that time of the year. Boulder Dash is all about the night rides and seems to take all day to break in, except when you catch it freshly greased, so day time rides will likely be disappointing for you after hearing so much hype from me about it. But it's nice being able to see where you're going once or twice at the end of the day before it gets dark and the ride is almost broken in.

Quassy ends its season around that weekend, so check to see if it's open. A couple of hours there would be a good add-on for the day with its new GG woodie. I would save SFNE for Sunday if possible. You can do both in a day, but you might regret not getting to spend enough time at the Lake. And heck, you may wish you had more time at SFNE as well.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: dkny6363 on December 13, 2010, 09:36:38 PM
I was going to mention Quassy but couldn't remember the name. How far is that from LC. It's closer to SFNE than it is to LC is it not? Something to consider. Really I should go during the summer so I could do all 3 plus Canobie as well but then I miss out on Ocboulderfest. If i'm not mistaken night rides are scarce during the summer as well. Why is it that Holiday world, as well as Lake Compounce recognize their coaster kill it at night but then almost never open in the dark? I never understood that.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: AV Matt on December 13, 2010, 09:44:16 PM
Because they cater to families instead of teenagers.

If I recall, Quassy is like 30-45 minutes from LC. I believe it's south of LC, so not closer to SFNE. While in the area of LC, go to Ted's Restaurant for a steamed cheeseburger. DELISH!

Save Canobie for a time when you can spend a full day open to close. It's an enchanting old park with a great woodie and tons of old charm. It tends to get crazy busy too, so you may need at least a day to ride everything.

I forget, but have you been to SFNE yet?
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: dkny6363 on December 13, 2010, 10:07:13 PM
I guess but weekends maybe open till 10 instead of 8:30 or 9 whatever it is. I believe one of the 2 stays open till 9:30 on saturday.

Yeah I just looked on Coasterdatabase and Quassy is only 14 miles SW of LC. I thought it was 45 min north of SFNE. Not sure why.

No I haven't been to SFNE.

Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: AV Matt on December 13, 2010, 10:20:31 PM
LC is open until 10 on weekends in the busy season. And open until 10+ during the Haunted Graveyard weekends in October.

Holiday World closes at 9:30 on Saturdays in the busy season is otherwise not open passed 8:30 now. The time zone confusion of Indiana made Holiday World think opening a half hour earlier and thus closing a half hour earlier was a good compromise for the eastern and central time zone visitors. Uhhh huh.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: dkny6363 on December 14, 2010, 02:09:37 PM
I forgot about the time change making a bit of a difference.

I'm hoping Ocboulderfest is on sat. the 10th this year and not the 17th. SFNE is closed sun the 18th this year for a private event. Most years the event is the sat. after Labour day, but I noticed not all the time. Once it was on Sept. 20th.

Encouraged to see Quassy offers Pay per ride. $3.50 per ride.
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: AV Matt on December 14, 2010, 06:49:12 PM
I wouldn't rule that Sunday out just yet for SFNE. Those buyouts sometimes get cancelled and enough in advance to plan a visit, but after the official schedule was posted so light crowds show up.

Looking at the LC calendar for 2011. There are no park hours after Sunday, September 11th until October 1st. So I'd bet on OcBoulderFest 2011 being on Saturday, September 10th. ;)
Title: Re: 2011 GA Outpost Trips
Post by: dkny6363 on December 14, 2010, 11:30:31 PM
I was thinking the same thing about the 10th. Unless it's like PPP where it doesn't exactly show up as an operating day on the calender.

Quassy is a half hour from LC according to Google Maps.

Dissapointed to see my trip on the I90 will cost me about $17/direction. Could be worse, if it was the same price/mile as the 407 in Toronto it would cost approx a grand. LOL. Not even joking on the amount.

Ouch! Almost as bad as getting caught going 200 KPH on the free roads up there. After seeing the billboard that says they'll take your car away, Bubba slowed down a bit. ;)

Believe it or not speeding is much more leniant up here. When the limit is 100(60mph aprox) you can easily get away with going 130 (80+ mph).

I think I know the signs you speak of... On the 401 montreal bound... I think it 150 kph gets you an automatic suspention, as well as a $50,000 fine??? Probably end up getting a $1000 fine and some points. It's a scare tactic due to the fact the 401 often has deaths occur due to high speeds. The trick is to follow a Quebec plate, cuz a cop always pulls over the french guy first. Now i'm not sure where americans rank on this list but for sure quebec before ontario for pullovers.

Somehow I think the yanks have a bigger blip on the radar.

In England they have signs that say "high fatality rate ahead". And they say how many people have died on them in the last two years or so.

Germany lets you on the "special" parts of the autobahn if you have a special license from them. Most people in America who say they've driven on the autobahn probably haven't gone faster than 75 mph.

In Western New York there is a saying "if your at 9 your fine, if your 10 you're mine!" Meaning 10 over is a ticket.

I've hit 220 KPH on the Autobahn in Germany, I thought my car was going to fall apart.

Most production cars aren't built to go that kind of speed. Even though you were only going around 100 mph, most cars don't get the privelege to go that fast in their lifetime. My car, a ford taurus, just went a buck fifteen on the parkway last week for the first time in its life.

My truck is governed at about 92mph.

Oh yeah something else interesting about England.... although they use the metric system, the road related stuff is still in miles and miles per hour.

I know. It shocked me when we got there. I was expecting everything to be in KM/KPH. It made driving on the wrong side of the car/road a little less painful for Bubba.

Cheapest option I've found is Nashville on Southwest for about $260 round trip. Would be a good option for stopping at Beech Bend on the way to Holiday World, then we can take our time heading back on Sunday after the late night activities and lack of sleep.

Bubba suggested driving though.

Was it a queen bed or a double bed? I believe the old rooms have the double beds and the new rooms have the queen beds, which were pretty comfy.

I specifically booked the "Deluxe" room instead of the standard room.

Thats what i`m trying to fing out.. lol

I don`t think I paid the 10-20 bucks extra but we were like 2 doors down from each other si I would assume we had the same room type. Who knows. I`m getting a legendary cabin next time.

If you want a Legendary Cabin, you need to book it a year in advance. All four have been booked for HWN since last Fall.

P.S.  And you'll be right in the middle of my friends' after-party. Our "group" get three or more of the four cabins every year. We have three of them for this year. Not sure who got the fourth one.

They have another new block of cabins as of this year as well. Rudolph cabins or something...

Booking in advance is my specialty. I booked my PPP room 10 months in advance last year.

Not sure about the new cabins, but the Legendary Cabins are secluded from the rest of the campground, which is why we try to get them so our after ERT parties don't get broken up as they have in the past. ;)

If you had a room with the rustic log beds then you had a deluxe room.  I thought it was decent, but that was after being tossed about on the Voyage for several hours.

Amazing how flight prices fluctuate based on the day of the week you are searching.  But somehow I don't want a stop-over in Georgia for a trip to Louisville.

What's holding you back? Do we need to organize a special trip?

No I can't go because my mom isn't interested in going that far west any time soon after heading to Cedar Point in the Summer. She is perfectly fine with going to SFoG, though. :P of course that trip is still in the planning phase. I don't get her, she's perfectly fine with going south but hates going west (the SFoG trip would be even longer...).

Here is the page for the new cabins... not quite ready for this years HWN. They should call them the timberliner cabins. ;)

Two extra twin beds in the loft but I don`t believe there is a futon like the other cabins... But for a bunch of guys sharing a cabin there is 1 extra bed.

Always look for the best flights on tuesday at 2-3 pm.  That's the best time to get the best prices.

Airlines put their new sale prices up on Tuesday (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=buy+airline+tickets+on+tuesday&aq=0&aqi=g2g-m5g-v3&aql=&oq=buy+airline+tickets+on+) at around 2-3 pm.  After midnite is true also for some companies, but for whatever reason, Tuesday is the day apparently.

Yes correct Tuesday 2-3pm best time

I have 2 Southwest AIrlines CHase Visa Cards and run as much purchases I can and bills through it
and just go online to pay within a few days to prevent interest charges
I get Points etc. towards free airfare.
I have 2  roundtrips (4 total) already I need to take within a year anywhere they fly
they just bought out AIR TRAN so they are expanding into the Caribbean and Europe

FYI Southwest doesn't charge to change your flight like other airlines and can be done online and even the day of a flight

Another nice item from that link (http://www.farecompare.com/articles/when-to-buy/when-to-buy-travel-advice/):

Quote
If you are shopping for a domestic airline ticket you should know that airlines tend to start releasing cheaper seats about 3 to 4 month before departure (this is when airlines begin to actively manage revenue for the cheapest of their 10 price points for seats on most flights) – and yes that is when you should start shopping, about 3 1/2 months before departure — any earlier and you’re probably paying too much.

No benefit in being the early bird.
Reserve that log bed or tent and wait a bit for the flight.

On the flip side, don't wait until the last minute either. I had to get to boston this week last minute. Direct flight from philly to logan would have been nearly 700 bucks. I found a delta flight instead through detroit to manchester NH for $210. The connection sucked but it was better than driving. I know I could have flown direct for 2-300 bucks had I booked it just 2-3 weeks ago. So don't wait too long!
