GFH to build theme parks in China
by Dylan Bowman on Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Bahrain-based Gulf Finance House (GFH) has teamed up with Six Flags to develop theme parks in China as the companies look to tap into the country's booming tourism industry.

The Islamic investment bank said on Tuesday it has signed a one-year exclusivity agreement with the US theme park operator that gives it the right to develop theme parks in the People's Republic.

GFH said the companies may also develop a Six Flags themed luxury resort, without giving any further detail.

"The agreement will lead to the development of an exciting, one of a kind tourist destination in China that is set to draw travelers from all around the globe," GFH Acting CEO Peter Panayiotou said in a statement.

China's travel and tourism industry generated $353.7 billion in 2006 and is expected to grow to $1.3 trillion in 2016, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

If it was a deal between Six Flags and HUSS, I would have given it 5 stars! ;-)

I know.  We never went full-speed ahead with trying to get people to completely change how they look for and discuss news on the site since it's part of the Master Plan that was put on hold.  But, as soon as people have time (and I have a reliable computer- don't buy HP!), more pieces of the puzzle will come together.  Until then, "ehh".

It's not you, it's a weaker dollar.

Huh?  A weaker dollar means it is cheaper to come here than go other places.  And for us, it costs much more to go out of the country.  IF tourism is down in the USA, it may be our national image, the difficulties of security or something else.  But it isn't the weaker dollar.

Now, if you mean the weaker dollar has made energy and imports more dear and we, the US residents, no longer have as much money to spend on discretionary things like tourism, you are onto something.  Which is why I don't necessarily buy the Shapiro/Snyder story that high gas prices may well benefit Six Flags as people may stay closer to home.  I fear they will rather husband their meager discretionary dollars to save for that ONE special trip, say to Disney or Universal, and the Six Flags passes may be foregone, or trips to the local park greatly curtailed, with in park spending even more so.

I've seen many foreign tourists at six flags this season.
And I don't mean the ones working there.

If you've ever taken a trip to Disney recently you will see many people are taking advantage of the weak US dollar.

Soon they will start making everything in the US again.

You are correct sir, with everything.  International tourist, especially those in countries with the Euro, are taking advantage of the weaker dollar to go to Orlando, LA, NYC, and the other major tourist attractions in the US. But homeland tourism is hurting.  In addition to that, the stronger Euro means that more Europeans are looking for more places to visit.  Enter Dubai.
