Amusement Park Dismantles Popular Roller Coaster

POSTED: 5:55 am EST November 22, 2006

AURORA, Ohio -- An amusement park is dismantling one of its newest and most popular roller coasters to move it to another park.

Workers at Geauga Lake recently started taking down X-Flight, a steel coaster near the park's front gate, said Bryan Edwards, a park spokesman.

The coaster will relocate in another park owned by Cedar Fair LP, the parent company of Geauga Lake. Cedar Fair operates a dozen amusement parks across the country, including Cedar Point in Sandusky. Edwards said he did not know where X-Flight would land.

There are no immediate plans to replace the coaster with another ride, Edwards said.

The removal of X-Flight follows another lackluster year at Geauga Lake. Attendance remained stagnant this year at around 700,000 visitors, similar to the 2005 and 2004 seasons, Edwards said.

Cedar Fair bought the park in 2004 from Six Flags, which sold it after watching attendance plunge for several years.

The loss of X-Flight and another ride -- a monorail -- doesn't mean Cedar Fair is losing faith in the park, Edwards said. Geauga Lake opened in 1888 and is one of the nation's oldest parks.

Cedar Fair has invested nearly $30 million over the past two years at Geauga Lake, adding an expansive water park named Wildwater Kingdom.

The $15 million ride made its debut at the park in 2001 as the first "flying coaster" in the Midwest. The coaster inverts riders to give them the sensation of soaring through the air. X-Flight stands 115 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 51 mph.

I found this one to be better than Batwing at SFA. What a shame, GL is a pretty nice park.

If the rumors I am hearing prove correct, you might more think of an island, not an adventure...

Boo, if it goes there then I would think it would be a total waste. I would send it to Michigans Adventure.

Im feeling it going to Dorney, but I still dont see the need for it to be moved at all!

PKI makes NO sense to me as CF would be sorta kinda following SFI's Mistakes and also it is in the same region

Ohio is a very large state compared to, say, New Jersey or Delaware.  Saying Kings Island is in the same region as Geauga Lake is about like saying Dorney is in the same region as Kennywood.  Very few people visit both Geauga Lake and Kings Island in any given season.

Also, Dorney has virtually no room for X Flight, unless they were going to do the old Six Flags trick of putting it in their parking lot.

It should also be pointed out that clearing has already begun in an area to the right of Flight of Fear behind Racer, where the helicopter concession once was.  The old Paramount Parks, you may remember, moved Stealth to Carowinds, where it lives happily as Borg: The Assimilator.  (Or at least lived under that name when the park closed for the season...Next year?  Who knows what it may be called!)

OHHH now I see the island you were speaking of. OK when we take our trip to ohio Maybe summer of 08. we will be visiting all three parks if they stay under CF management. Can't do it next summer going to see Mickey again. My son at just 42 inches this summer is a little small for the ohio trip just yet. Though it would be nice to have seen it at dorney since it is so close to us.

They could market it as Stealth 2 The Revenge with added barrel roll and helix!

Yeah, that sucks about Chiller...I hate to see it like that. Hey, so we should get a group picture or something ok. I'll call you later!
