Macy's Dickens Village in Philadelphia
« on: December 27, 2008, 12:24:06 PM »
Macys has continued Strawbridge’s Department Store annual Dickens Village tradition on the third floor of the center city Philadelphia store.

Dickens preludes the tale of a miserly bank owner named Scrooge

The story is told on plaques placed in each scene of the village tour

Bob Cratchit asks to have Christmas Day off to celebrate with his family, but Scrooge is not having it

Marley appears to Scrooge in the middle of the night and warns him of eternal peril and three visiting spirits

Scrooge watches his young self, left behind at the schoolhouse

A little further into the future, Scrooge watches his fiance', Isabel at Mr. Feziwig's party

Isabel would later break their engagement, and Scrooge begins to bury himself in work

The Ghost of Christmas Present pays Scrooge a visit

Bob Cratchit gives a toast in Scrooge’s name as Scooge learns the condition of Tiny Tim for the first time

The Ghost of Christmas Future shows Scrooge a lonely future, if he doesn’t mend his ways

Scrooge gives Bob Cratchit the day off and the villagers rejoice!

Until…

Angry monsters destroy their village

The Village ran from November 28th to December 24th this year.

Macy’s has also continued the light show from its John Wanamaker roots

Julie Andrews narrates the story

and My Favorite Things is one of the songs that is played in the show

The Finale is accompanied by the huge Wanamaker organ; It’s the largest musical instrument in use in the world.

The light show runs at the top of every hour and continues through New Years Eve.
Prepare to weather the storm!

At least Macy's did not ruin this when they took over Strawbridge's.

The light show is pretty raw. I use to go to Philly every year to see it. But now our friend who lived there moved out to California so we haven't gone as much.

It will always be Wanamakers to me. Thanks for posting this since I only stayed for the light show last week.
