Big Bad Wolf will give final rides on September 7th 2009
« on: July 24, 2009, 10:35:35 AM »
To say I'm p!ssed is an understatement.  I think they handled this in about the worst possible way and I would bet the only reason this much information was released was because of all the hate mail they were getting from the "rumors".

Quote
After 25 years traveling at the speed of fright, The Big Bad Wolf will take its last trip through Busch Gardens’ Bavarian village Sept 7. The ride has simply reached the end of its service life. The decision was made to announce the closing now so fans have time to ride the “Wolf” one last time before the ride closes. We are reviewing several design concepts for a new park attraction to replace The Big Bad Wolf, but no announcement is planned at this time.

This is VERY dissapointing to say the least . We just rode it less then two weeks ago . There was a constant reminder of how it was 25 years old ,  Seemed like a big deal I guess it wasn't such a big deal after all huh .

I'll have to grab my final rides the Tuesday before it closes.

Yeah, that sucks about Chiller...I hate to see it like that. Hey, so we should get a group picture or something ok. I'll call you later!

What are they going to replace it with honestly...If the speculation they are scared of the giga at Doswell is true, then that is such rubbish to remove a solid ride like Big Bad Wolf. Hell, a solid woodie addition to BGW would have easily competed with the giga.

Word is (from the same source that confirmed the Wolf's fate several months ago) that the replacement has already been decided on and is "not as impressive" of a ride as the Wolf is. So don't expect a Manta style flyer diving down to the river or anything that will make up for the loss of the best coaster in Virginia. I am the biggest wood coaster fan there is, but even I would rather they keep the great ride they already have than get a great woodie. There is plenty of land there and no need to remove one ride for another. They can have both.

But it's all about money and since the park is under new ownership with no sentimental ties to the park, it's even more about the money now. They are quite capable of having the Wolf rebuilt from scratch to preserve it at least another 25 years, but they are not interested in doing so. Shame on them.

UNREAL DECISION

I'm a huge fan of Arrow suspendeds and never got to ride the wolf. I was planning a trip to VA next year on account of the new giga (in thoery) as well as the wolfs last year. Now i've decided on other plans and I'll be sure to let BGW know about it.

I think I know what the answer is but i'll ask anyways... Is there a chance another park could rescue it or is its structure to based on the terrain?
I would assume it unlikely. Imagion the wolf swooping through the trees at knoebels.... WOW!

It is very much a terrain coaster and it would be silly for someone to move it when they could have the ride re-fabricated from scratch. Maintenance is the issue here--expensive maintenance.

IMO maintaing a proven crowd favorite is better than risking an investment on a new ride, but I don't get to make those decisions. And I'm kind of glad I don't have the responsibility.

A real shame that such a great ride had to be removed. They should have contacted Vekoma to refurbish it like that park in the UK did a few years back.

What's worse about them removing it, is the way they are doing it. Destroying all the scenery and trees around the coaster. I only went on this 2x and that was the 2nd to last day before it closed. It is a true tribute to Ron Toomer and now it's gone. The layout was amazing and BGW has a lot of work ahead of themselves if they are to even come close to coming up with a suitable replacement.

We will all miss you BBW!

I've been going on it since I was 4, so eleven years of riding, over 100 rides(15+ this year on two visits). When you do something that much and that long you grow attached to it. I loved that ride, and I will miss it. It was a good starter ride for kids new to coasters, it was smooth, it looked fast, it had a very strong theme to it. Now the only rollercoaster kids will have is the Grover's Alpine Express. It'll also be a shame not seeing that drop from the bridge next year and many times after that. :'(
